We have a new store in our little town that is growing, it is called Rural King, its kind of like a Harbor Freight Pro Bass shop or maybe Cabela's. I was browsing around and saw this jar we played with in the service somewhat, Tannerite, it was the starting point of many things taught to do what tannerite did, only bigger and improvised. Is tannerite actually legal now or is there a special permit like full auto or silenced weapons? If anyone can buy this, and it is cheap, I pity the innocent ones going to watch, I can start seeing the headlines of how it was misused, and what range will let you use this? I kind of think you need to have plenty of property where no one will call the law for firing your weapons.... Can I please get some input on this?

p.s. I do apologize if this is in wrong forum or if this content is not allowed, after all it is sold in a public discount hardware\livestock feed\sporting goods type store

My opinion, I think a lot of shooters ignite tannerite for entertainment, not realizing they are irritating the heck out of the neighbors. Something along the lines of shooting at No Trespassing signs.

Depends on the state and the lands. I guess some people in Texas use it for Hog hunting. Certain BLM or public lands it might be ok, sometimes maybe only on private. Its a binary explosive, so DOT rules of transporting explosives apply. I would never risk mixing then transporting as that can be a series situation if pulled over by the wrong person...as well as maybe not the safest thing to do.
On another side, and if any on here is/was an EOD tech and remembers some HME stuff should chime in, I believe (93% sure) the aluminum powder mix in tannerite has a (proprietary) small amount of perchlorate in it to help as a sensitizer.
I dont know if any ranges let it be used. So not to insult anyone's intelligence...but it has to be said because dudes blow off limbs all the time (check youtube and google if you dont believe) but when shooting it, as cool as it might sounds, don't place the explosive in any containment...so no microwaves, trashed refers, on top of a old lawn mower (yes the guy that did this lost a leg), a old junked car, you get the point. Stay the appropriate distance away. Be mindful mixing, and you should be alright.

Almost every hardware, sporting goods, and farm/fleet store sells tannerite targets.
They can be very entertaining.
Just like guns, cars, step ladders, electric toasters and many other items, when used irresponsibly people can and do get hurt.
The world cannot be made idiot proof.

Klint Beastwood, that is what I was saying, I can asee the headlines now of misuse. Tannerite is an explosive and idiots will do with it like they do with fireworks. While in the service I was taught things from an instructor from 89D, that is where I first saw tannerite, thermite, c4, to name a few, he taught us how to make thermite in a pinch, and common household items to make other things, but when it is taught or given out like tannerite is then we will hear "Hold my Beer and watch this!" more often, kind of like drinking a few and smoking while reloading, it will have a bad ending....always.

Highly likely that you were playing with just ANAL (hahaha yeah i know)
ammonium nitrate aluminum powder. Tannerite is simply a brand name and patent. The mixture and uses as an explosive has been known and used for a long time. I've pretty much already spoiled the tannerite secret is that they use a perchlorate in the aluminum powder as a sensitizer.

So its like drunkenpoacher said. The world can't be wall padded for our little retarded human brothers and sisters. I say let natural selection take its course. I've played with tannerite....ive done all the things I say not to do. Not everyone is as lucky as me. I've nitrated chemicals to make explosives, boiled down proxides, made nitroglycerin before would still not recommend it to others. A few people are going to do it. One is going to suck at it. Sucks to suck is the way i see it.

The old term was Ammonal.
I have also read that there is a little zirconium in name brand Tannerite. Not much, that stuff is expensive.
I am surprised that sale of even a "binary" explosive is allowed.

True, but there have been things to rig up and shoot at for an exploding reaction for many many years before tannerite came along.
Just like guns, cars, step ladders, electric toasters and many other items, when used irresponsibly people can and do get hurt.

Perfect.
