While messing around with various .44 special factory loads, I discovered that the 246 Grain Round Nose loads tended to average velocities in the mid to high 600 fps range instead of the advertised 770 fps. This was true of Remingtons I clocked in 1985 and a recent batch of WWs. I started messing around with this level of load in magnum cases ( some of my .44s dont take to the extra jump from special cases) and found that 3.5 bullseye comes pretty close. Some bench shooting revealed my best yet groups with the Lee wadcutter - running to just a bit over an inch at 25 yards. and consistent accuracy with a couple of 240-250 grain bullets. Very mild and easy to shoot. These .44s are a lot of fun even when the magnum is strained out of 'em.
