After attending a local gun show this weekend, i was looking for a riflescope to replace the exixting one i have mounted on it.

I wanted to by a high magnification scope for exclusive taget shooting off a bench.

I found a Tasco 10 to 40 power scope that was priced reasonable. [This model was manufactured in China]

Has anyone here bought or used this particular scope or Tasco product in particular?

I salesperson explained that Tasco had gone out of buisness and Bushnell had taken over thier product line.

Comments???

Shouldn't that be 40mm (objective lens diameter) and not 40X? I've never seen a variable that goes up to 40X in stock form without modification from outfits like Premier Reticle.

That's correct about Bushnell taking over the Tasco name. Bushnell will not honor warranties on Tasco scopes made prior to them taking over the name. There is a date code under the occular bell (the eye piece) that determines if it was made before or after they acquired the Tasco name.

My recent problem with a Tasco product:

Having sampled a few low end scopes (made in China) to see if there were any diamonds in the rough, I've come to the conclusion that no Chinese made scopes will ever perch atop any of my rifle as of 10/03. Nothing really wrong with them mechanically (at least the ones I've bought) but the optics just aren't to my liking. Guess Leupold has spoiled me.

I've got a BSA 8-32 X 40 Mildot/target turrets for sale if you're interested (made in China). Has seen less than 300 rounds of .22 mag and .17 HMR mix. $75 delivered.

HKSW, no it's a 10 - 40 magnification - it has a 50mm objective lens.

I bought it, it already sits on top of my rifle, while boresighting - it tracked ok.

Taking it to the range tommorrow - hope it works out.

12-34hom,

So what is the maximum range that you will be shooting at? When I used to shoot matches up to 200yds, I used a common Redfield 6-18 but just left it at 18 power. Anything over that I used a Leupold 10x. It's funny that you would use a lower power at longer ranges but I had the Leupold modified to a C-D-C with target turrets, plus it was less effected by heat mirages like a higher power scope would be and you get a better field of view. A good scope (when I first started) would start anywhere from $200 on up (usually up). BTW, I threw away a Tasco 24x target scope years ago when I first started benchrest shooting. After the third warranty work I gave up, threw it away and called it a learning experience. I only have my Leupold and Unertil left now.

Tasco.

Yes, from what i've been reading and researching on the net; these scopes are dubious at best.

But for the price i got it at i thought i could take a chance.

I would love to have a Leupold 6+20 or 8+25 long range. But i don't have the 600.00 to 800.00 duckies to fork out right now...

Ranges i would be shooting at = out to 400 yards.

I hate shoddy scopes. But that said, just consider it to be disposable. We've all owned our share of bad scopes over the years. Just use it until it breaks. But when it breaks, don't be surprised. It should work okay for you. The light transmission won't be stellar so that might affect you in lower light conditions. As long as it can hold its zero, shoot the heck out of it until you can get something better.

When the Tasco scopes were made in Japan, they acquired a good reputation for quality and price. Then Tasco moved the contract to China, and their quality suffered. Moving away from the original contractor in Japan is a common practice among new optics labels, since a label can be put on it anywhere. They get a good rep, then cash in on it for lots of years by lowering the quality.

In any case, optics made outside of Europe, North America, and Japan are a risky proposition. You might get lucky, though - 40 years ago, the risky list included Japan. I have a Kowa riflescope and a spotting scope from that era, and they still work fine. It depends upon the level of risk you want to assume.

Tasco.

At the range today. Everything worked fine.

Thier optics are much to crow about, but for the price i'll shoot it till it won't work.

Thanks for all the replies.
