My wife does not carry and has no desire to carry. My 20 y/o step-daughter recently moved out of the house and has been staying with her boyfriend and his family. My wife found out today that she has a had a couple of unsettling encounters with her boyfriend's uncle. Without going into a long story about the details, my wife started asking me questions about tasers and I told her that I know nothing about them. She's now talking about getting one for herself and one for her daughter.

I told her that pepper spray would be easier to carry and can be used from a distance. I assume that most tasers require contact unless you are using one that shoots barbs of some sort and of course this makes it much easier for the intended target to grab it and use it against the person. Most of the tasers I've seen are relatively large so I assume most women would carry them in their purse and not on their person, but my wife is thinking more about her daughter just having a tazer to keep in her room when she is home.

What do you guys know about tasers? Any recommended brands or models? Better than nothing or just stick to pepper spray?

This shouldn't be a discussion about "tasers", but about how critically important it is for your stepdaughter to get out of that situation IMMEDIATELY. Staying in an unsafe situation will only lead to tragedy.

If you want to read about Tasers there are many threads and they just boil down to - get the Taser C2 AND OC spray, BUT ask your stepdaughter what does she thinks is going to happen if she actually has to light this known threat up? What will happen to her that she shouldn't do right now to get away from the threat and prevent that from happening?

BTW, "stun guns" are not Tasers. So called stun guns work like a cattle prod by causing pain when you poke someone and trigger the current. They're totally useless for serious threats. Tasers shoot darts trailing wires that feed specific current that "shorts out" the nerves of the target. Police use Tasers because they work. They don't use stun guns.

There's not much to discuss because there's only one useful product out there for civilians to carry that is readily available, the Taser C2.
