Taurus 327 Federal , is back

Not really interested in this particular revolver but I’m always glad to see more offerings in a 32 caliber. I wish that the gun world would start lavishing them with praise the way they do other calibers/platforms so we could see more offerings, both in terms of ammunition and firearms. It may well be the single most under appreciated caliber out there, relative to usefulness. It has so much to offer currently, and untapped potential as well.

With the introduction of Federal’s .30 Super Carry, I wonder if a .32 cal revolver could be cut for moon clips. Something like the Taurus could potentially be used with up to 6 different cartridges, including .32 S&W, .32S&W-L, .32 H&R, .327 Fed, .32 ACP, and .30 SC.

One thing to figure out, the .30 SC case has a very slight taper. So the chambers would have to be cut for it, leaving the base of the rimmed cartridges with around .002” less support. That may be an issue for the highest pressure loads, leading to excessive case swelling.

Or maybe not. It might be interesting to look into.

I am glad Taurus is making a 6 shot 327. I wouldn't buy one since I already have a S&W model 431PD in 32 mag but I'm all for anything that promotes 32 caliber guns. And yes just about all 32s are going to be reloaders rounds. Fine with me. I have lots of bullets and brass on hand plus lead and bullet molds.

32s rock. They are some of my favorite rounds to shoot.

I knew I was going to end up getting reloading dies for 327/32 H&R when I started considering getting one pst summer. I will definitely look at getting the Taurus 327 when they become available around me. I've always had good luck with Taurus revolvers.

I had a 2” and with anything less than 4” it’s a hard pass. With anything less than 6” it’s probably still a pass. The pressure of 327 is beyond ridiculous. It is very much in line with a 8” 223 AR. Recoils wasn’t bad in the 2” so longer barrels aren’t really a necessity to add weight, but anything to push blast a bit further out the front. Even if they jugged the stupid thing it would be an improvement. 1/2” back bore to .400 would direct the blast. The pressure in a 327 or in the new 32 super duper are just not handgun friendly without a suppressor, linear compensator, or enough barrel to push the blast away.

having been around a lot of heavy hitters, the blast and flash of a shorty 327 are on par with shorty ARs and rifle caliber pistols of all varieties. The 10” 308 pistol I shot over Christmas was not as wild as a 327 snub.

With the way things are right now pretty much any caliber that has a rim requires a person to reload to be able to shoot them as the ammo is just gone.

When things return to normal the price of .32 S&W Long will likely be back to $1 a box more than .38 Spl. (talking online prices) the cost increase for shooting a .32 vs .38 is negligible. Even before the Covid I was having a hard time finding .357 ammo that wasn't watered down for less than .327 American Eagle.

I'd say the biggest issue with the .32's is that retailers don't stock the ammo. I think with all the new gun owners we have now the low inventory levels that lgs and big box retailers normally stock for the less common calibers is going to change because no matter what the caliber is the demand has increased across the board.

I could warm up to a gun matching the marketing, but the forums seem to indicate that the interest is in pocket guns, with this ammo really too hot but could provide an additional round in similar or same sized guns, given a stepped down loading or a new shorter round that uses this same new bullet and then able to run in a 380-size gun.

Every time I read a thread about 327 magnum, it reinforces my wife's hypothesis that my stairs don't go all the way up to the attic. Mine is a 4" SP101, which is not a tiny revolver, but various varieties of factory 327 have always felt milder to me than shooting a 4" medium-framed 357. Shooting small 357 snubbies is much more exciting than any 327 I've shot so far.

It's apparently an 856 in a different caliber? I have owned several Model 85's and liked them, but the NiB 3" 856 I purchased online did not fit my hand well, I didn't like the balance or trigger, etc. I traded it unfired towards something else at the LGS.

32 revolvers are a lot of fun, that's for sure. 32's S&W long was my daughter's first centerfire caliber to shoot, and she stuck to it for a while. I'm comfortable with 32 H&R or 327 for SD. It's good to see Taurus making them again, even if that particular model is not to my taste.

A picture, or it didn't happen:

I've given up hope (and am too old to wait) that Ruger will ever make their pricey LCR .327 Magnum with a 3" barrel. I wonder how close in size and weight the Taurus 327 is to the LCR? If similar in size and weight when compared to the LCR and, especially, if the 3" barrel Taurus is available with a snag-free hammer, I'm a buyer.

I had to replace my 856 Grips with a set of Uncle Mikes I had stuffed away

I thought I had a pic comparing the 856 with the LCR … but I don’t
If I get feeling better tomorrow I will get a pic
( I got the Virus) and in the bed
They use same OWB holsters

Yes it is the same frame as the 856. The 942 in 22lr and 22WMR also uses the same frame.I am another that does not care for the current black rubber grips on the Taurus revolvers, they don't fit my hands either. I much prefer the wood 85 grips and have put them on my 942 and 856. The wood grips are more comfortable for me.

From top to bottom: 3" 85 (2001), 2" 856 (2022), and 2" 942 (2021) I also put the rubber grips there to show the difference.

I wonder how close in size and weight the Taurus 327 is to the LCR?

I weighed my Taurus revolvers:
942 - 24 ounces (23. 6 listed by Taurus)
856 - 22 ounces (same as Taurus lists)
3" ported barrel 85 - 23 ounces
327 - 22 ounces per Taurus website

From Ruger's website the for their 327 double action revolvers:
LCR - 17 ounces
LCRx - 17.7 ounces
3" SP101 - 27 ounces
5" GP100 - 39 ounces

Being on the 856 frame (aren’t they 6 shot 38s?), if they had made it in 32 Mag, could they have squeezed a 7th round in? That would have been very appealing.

I really like the 32s, I really like Taurus and how they shoot and handle, and I reload but I just can’t see me grabbing one of these. Like what SteadyD stated, the purpose of the 32 in a smaller j frame sized pistol was lesser recoil and and extra round over the 38/357. Well you have a now larger than a j frame pistol and the same capacity as the 38/357. I know everyone is goo goo ga ga over the 327 magnum, but I think it would go over better if in 32H&R, or even 32SW Long, and added a seventh round.

Waiting on Taurus is bring out a 44spec 5 shot in the same size frame and cylinder as the 856. Would buy two!

Sounds like I’m dissing Taurus and 32s, but I’m not. I think Taurus has really turned it around and for the last five years put out some solid handguns. But lack of factory ammo is going to kill the novice interested in them. At least me thinks so.

I have an LCR for 327fm shooting, but lately my compact revolvers have been shot and carried by my girlfriend; the .32 S&W Long. About a month ago I was in the market for a .32 snub and was about to order the Charter Arms undercoverette or whatever it is now. The salesman showed me a slightly used 431PD for $410, I bought it immediately.

I've owed Taurus revolvers in the early 90s and they were pretty good; however later guns seemed to have problems and calendar page turn around warranty times.

The new state side facility and seemingly upgrade in quality control makes them a contender again for me.

I wish Ruger would offer a 2” SP in .32 whatever. .327 would give most flexibility. Even to ahalf lug 2.5” like that limited Lipsey they did in .357. The need the Novak sights the standard, really makes a difference.
