Taurus 605 quality?

90s was typically really solid for most models. The 66 based models really were at the top of their game and their 92 bases pistols were top of the line. I don’t know anything about the 605 in particular, but late 80s to mid 90s is generally regarded as Taurus golden years.

I had a 605 from the mid-90s. Solid, very accurate, did go out of time after a while, but most brands have this happen from time to time. Probably worth taking a chance on. I believe Taurus has gone back to lifetime warranties now.

I worked for a shop in the early '90s and we sold a lot of Taurus revolvers. My opinion is that they were good solid guns - we rarely had any customers bring one back with complaints. I did trigger work on many of them. They were not as good as a S&W but much more affordable for many people (which was why we started carrying them) I would feel comfortable relying on one for business use. I tuned a 605 up for the owner's wife to carry in '93 and as far as I know she is still carrying it today. It was very smooth and surprisingly accurat. After about 2000 I started hearing MANY problems with them. Buy carefully.

If that's based on the Model 85, they made some pretty good ones in the late 80's and early 90's.

I've owned three and they all went bang every time.

The three triggers were very good, okay, and terrible (in the order that I acquired them).

I have two Taurus revolvers, but not that model. Summary opinion of both of mine is that they're strong, solid and reliable but not finely finished or particularly attractive. If you want something that just works but does not draw any oohs and ahhs at the range for its appearance you'll probably be satisfied.

Not sure about the 605 but I have a 617 (7 shot .357) and it’s been great. Not sure of the year of manufacturing though. Anyone have a website I can go to so I can find your by using the S/N# ?

My 605 is early '00s production and has been great. It was $199 on consignment at the LGS and looked essentially unfired. The key with Taurus is to do the pre-purchase revolver check-out on that specific gun, especially for pick-up, endshake and cylinder gap.

I have a 605 from 1996. Bought used with a known issue. The spring that retracts the firing pin was compressed, so the pin would stick in the primer & the cylinder would not rotate. Returned to Taurus for repair. Took 6 weeks to get it back, but it came back fixed. The cylinder lockup is a bit sloppy, but it does go bang when I pull the trigger. Can't really speak to accuracy. It's a snubby & I never tried anything beyond just hitting the meaty parts of a B27 out to maybe 7 or 8 yards. It works good for doing that. I actually sold it to a co-worker, but decided I liked it enough to buy it back ( at more than I sold it for ). It's an oddball as well. Factory bobbed hammer & porting.
