These two handguns seems to be comparable in just about every category. Curious of you guys opinions. I think the quality of the budget guns as we refer to them has soared here recently.

The biggest difference between the two is which company will stand behind their product better. Taurus is one of the worst customer service gun companies, Ruger is one of the best customer service gun companys. Also Ruger cares about the people that buy their product and bends over backwards to make their consumers happy. Taurus, not even close.

Well I sort of had the Taurus G3's predecessor the PT111 Gen. 3 and I currently have a Ruger SR9c. I know, not really apples to apples but I checked out the Security 9 when it first came out and while I wasn't overly wowed by it, I thought at the price point it was selling for, made it a pretty good buy for the money. I have not come across a G3 yet but if it shares the overall shape in the grip frame like the PT111 then I would not get it. To me the PT111 just didn't point naturally in my hand, like I always had to raise the muzzle a little bit more when I was trying to acquire the sights. Also the trigger and safety weren't as refined as the ones on my SR9c.

So try if you can to handle both of them and see which one you like better. Quality wise I think they're both decent products though Ruger would definitely garner more favorable points with their Customer Service!

I have both. While I like the way the Taurus feels in my hand. The Ruger has it beat based on Customer Service and Performance.

They both eat any type of manufacturer ammo that I have fed them. However I reload, and the Ruger Security 9 is less finicky when it comes of OAL and has worked with all my reloads. Taurus requires a lower OAL and I have to use shorter bullets.

In terms of finish, The Ruger's finish feels better while the G3 seems dull and rougher.

The one area where the Taurus is better in my opinion, is in the bullet striking mechanism. The Ruger Security 9 is Hammer fired, while the Taurus G3 is striker fired. When using the Ruger, there is a small amount of play where the hammer moves slightly back before the hammer strikes. This can be slightly distracting when accuracy is concerned, but can be overcome. The Taurus G3 is striker fired, which doesn't encounter any of that. That is the one area where the Taurus G3 has the Ruger Security 9 beat.

When comparing it to a Ruger, and looking at all the aspects of Ruger comes out on top (Customer Service and history-Ruger, Ammo compatibility-Ruger, finish-Ruger, Accuracy-Draw Firing Mechanism-Taurus. With customer service and and history behind the product support weighing the heaviest and justifies the slightly higher cost (20 dollar difference when comparing my purchase price) makes the Ruger come out on top in my opinion.

I still, I like my G3 and you do get plenty of gun for the price, but when comparing the two, Ruger is the better value.

If you care about a manual safety like I do then only the G3 would be had. If not then Ruger has certainly had the best customer service if you have issues.

As a general rule I am very skeptical of budget anything and when it comes to something I may have to bet my life on even more so. That being said I trust Ruger more than Taurus.

Customer service seems to be a big major difference. As far as reputation and quality of course Ruger is far ahead. I’m just curious as to how much ahead. From what I’m hearing Taurus has upped their game. The only Taurus I have is a 38 special revolver and for Ruger I have a m77 mark 2. Never held a Taurus or Ruger handgun. Maybe it’s time lol

I have a Security 9 and I'm very unimpressed with it. I don't know anything about the Taurus but compared to the M&P Compact 9 which is a similar sized gun, the Ruger falls way short in terms of reliability. Of course the Security was cheaper. I should've known better as I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for.

What issues are you having? Mine has been 100% reliable. Have you contacted Ruger about it?

I purchased the G3 last saturday. It seems a pretty well made pistol for the price. I have no experience with the Security 9 but I think is a very ugly pistol. Probably the best comparison of the two has been made by sootch00 on youtube.

I made a review of the G3 here: https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/my-new-taurus-g3-alot-of-pics.877292/
I haven't shot it because of covid allert here in Italy.
The grip is perfect for my hand and the pistol points very naturally. I'm impressed with the trigger and the second strike capability is a plus for me. The thumb safety is very useful.

I would not be interested in either but if I had to make a choice it would definitely be the Ruger, but I would rather spend just a little more for the Ruger SR9 series pistol.

How is the corrosion resistance of both guns? I'm on the coast in FL and I've actually considered the G3 (or G2) or the Ruger as a sometimes carry, mostly car gun.

Ewww. That's a good one. I've lived in Florida, so I know humidity there is crazy high. Both firearms have very good corrosion resistance from my experience, but I live in Texas. It's humid here, but not humid like living in a peninsula.

The finish on the Security nine looks very similar to M&P's armonite. Details indicate it is a blued finish. On the Taurus G3, the finish is much less shiny. Details indicate a tenifer matte black finish.

On feel, the Taurus matte black finish seems stickier while the Security 9 feels slicker. That of course is on the slide, the finish on the lower portion of each pistol is a polycarbonate type of composition for both firearms

Out of the 2 I would go for the Ruger. I had a thing going on a few months ago to where I was trying to decide on a budget 9mm pistol . I was trying to choose between these 2 and the S&W SD9. I chose the SD9 . It has been around quite a few years and it very reliable and the price is the same if not cheaper than the Ruger.

I hate to be the guy who is given the option of 2 guns, then suggests a different gun, but I'd rather have the palmetto dagger (g19 clone) for $300 over either. At least it's still in the price range ballpark. ;) And technically not available at the moment...... But I can be patient. There aren't any bullets to shoot right now anyhow.

I would choose pretty much anything over the Taurus. Get the Ruger. Or, look at some other guns in that price range. Sometimes you can get awesome deals on the M&P Shield version 1

I have the Shield in 9mm and love it, but the barrel on the Shield is only 3.1 inches. The barrel length on the Ruger and Taurus are 4 inches each. The Ruger and Taurus also have larger ammo capacities (15-17) over the Shield (<10). A more comparable M&P would be the M&P 9mm Compact 2.0 which has comparable ammo capacity and a 4 inch barrel (which, by the way is one of my personal favorites for competition). But the M&P compact in 9mm is right around 529,00 right now (prices for this one have been going up as well).

Having fired both firearms in the OP, I can say that the Taurus is an excellent option. In today's current situation, the Security 9 has jumped up to 369.00 (GaG) while the Taurus G3 (Gunbuyer) can still be found right at around 319.00. But I would also add that given the shortages, if you find one, you may want to pull the trigger as they seem to be getting harder and harder to find.

Either way you won't be disappointed both are excellent.

I have the Security 9 and am very satisfied with it. I haven’t shot the G3 but have shot the G2. I like it a lot too. I’d go with whichever feels better to you.
