Purchased this handgun 2 days ago...I shot 75 rounds flawlessly with decent accuracy (new right out of the box). I field stripped, cleaned and oiled my handgun and I had problems reassembling it. I took it back to the dealer, they pointed out that I had to put the magazine back in the pistol prior to placing the pin back in it (apparently the barrel will roam and go back to far, thus causing to jam if you dont have the magazine in prior to pin placement when reassembling)..We'll that seem to work. That night I when to the local range fired 2 shots and the gun jammed because the firing wouldnt retract. I took it back to dealer....now its off to taurus for repair. Anybody having similar problems? Was it a mistake to purchase?...Other than those problems I love the gun...lol

Sounds to me like you damaged the magazine itself. I've seen many magazines from all different gun makes damaged by leaving the magazine in the gun. In disassembly, the first step is to remove the magazine and clear the weapon. In reassembly, the last step is to cycle the gun to make sure you got everything right THEN insert the magazine prior to storing or loading.

If that's what it is, Taurus should hook-you up. It's not a bad on your part, just a lesson learned. The PT 111 Pro seems to be a vast improvement over the first guns. Soon, they might make a gun nearly as good as the KT P11 from which the design was stolen. Now if they could only build it as cheap.

I did remove magazine prior to field stripping. The gun dealer put the magazine in prior to pin placement when reassembling...that was the only way we could get the slide to go back into position.....Doesnt explain the firing pin not retracting after firing....oh well I will give Taurus the benifit of the doubt.....mean while, I do have ms. reliable my ruger p 97 although she's a bit chucky to carry

Oh, firing pin... I reread your post and you omitted the "Pin" part of firing pin. Sorry. Might explain the firing pin still. If you damaged the magazine, it could have caused further damage to the striker. Wait a second, the PT111 has a striker, correct? With a striker, the TRIGGER retracts the firing pin. I think there is a rebound spring that keeps it from sticking out the breechface, but it's Double Action Only so the trigger does the retracting.

To tell you the truth, I can't picture the mechanism well enough now to figure out what's going on. My first Millinium Pro pistols are in the mail and I'll be stocking them next week, hopefull. I'm only going to buy the 45 caliber version. Might keep one for myself.

When reassembling the PT111, you have to hold it barrel down when sliding the slide back onto the frame, that way the barrel stays in place. You were told wrong at you gun shop. It is not an easy weapon to reassemble, but is not impossible either. check out http://www.unitedforums.com/cgi-bin/tfcgi/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro&BypassCookie=true

we could always use more Taurus people, and there is a lot of good info on Taurus firearms. do a search for the PT111, and you will find some really good info on disassembly, and reassembly.

I know my first posting kinda rambled; I' will try to be more conceice. There were two separate problems.

1) The problem reassembling the pistol after cleaning and oiling ( the slide would not go back into place after I put the retaining pin back in).

2) The firing pin wouldn't retracting after firing the pistol. (back to Taurus for repair)

Dont get me wrong I love the looks, feel and accuracy of the PT111 Pro. I guess I am just alittle miffed that I had these problems after just purchasing this pistol

The best way I found to reassemble my 111 is to hold the slide etc upside down while putting it back on the frame and also applying pressure to the chamber the whole time to make sure the barrel catches the pin it needs to. Kinda weird but it works.

Brigrat is on it. I have 2 of the regular PT111's and you have to hold and depress the barrel to the rear to reassemble it In my PT111 the bottom barrel lug must be in front of the crossbar as you pull back and lock the slide prior to inserting the pin or else the whole assemby will be whomperjawed. This will lead to locking the mechanism in a completely unworkable fashion as it returns to battery and it becomes quite a task to unhookie it.

I never reassemble it with a magazine in place.

Glad you got the Pro model. The trigger is much improved over the previous design. Work with it a little before you give up and send it back. You'll enjoy it. Good choice for an inexpensive self-protection piece.

Rabbit

After stripping and trying to reassemble, scratching my head, then actually looking at the manual, I realized that I purchased a chinese puzzle. Or is it a brazilian puzzle? Not happy. It needs to be more "glock-like" for the patience-impaired.

Pushing the barrel down IS the key to reassembly. (Ask me how I know!) That is the only problem I have had with my PT-111. If you forget and the barrel slides back too far..... :cuss: ... otherwise it is one of the easier semis to field strip and clean in my opinion.

" 2) The firing pin wouldn't retracting after firing the pistol. (back to Taurus for repair)"

um...did you remove any of the screwed in covers that cover the striker bar parts inside the bottom side of the slide? There are 2 infinetesimally small springs inside there that are absolutely essential to firing pin actuation.

The reason I know this is because I removed them to detail clean one of mine. I was extremely careful to put all these small parts on a clean sheet of white paper during the cleaning operation, but I had not counted on cats and a Lab puppy supervising me at the time.

These parts are very...very poorly illustrated in the parts diagram of the manual. Fortunately I had the second pistol to disassemble so I could Xerox these parts and I sent the enlarged views to Taurus, who sent me the proper replacement items.

I'd advise against removng the small rectangular cover on the underside of the slide under all but the most critical need. This is a sure guarantee of disaster to do so. The lever inside the plate is the mechanism that captures the firing pin on the rebound to keep it from going 'machine pistol' so to speak. It's there for a reason, primarily your safety and those around you.

You didn't remove the plate, did you? That's the only reason I can think of that could prevent it from actuating the striker unless the slide and barrel are not returning to battery due to a faulty reassembly of those components.

Regards,
Rabbit.

It sounds to me like you missed the barrel pin hole when you put it togethor the first time. This would lock the slide in place and explain why you have to press down to get it lined up in the first place. The magazine thing is a gun store commandoe comment...........

The firing pin not retracting on a new gun may be a matter of a good field strip and clean out the channel. You never know..but since its new, why not send it back.

A trick with Taurus's customer service is to get in touch with the actual people doing work on the gun. The customer service people will tell you "We will have to answer your question, you cant speak to them.!" But ask them what main spring weight you would run with a 20# recoil spring in the little Pro! Now you are talking "gun talk" and they cant recite an answer out of their little manuals.....LOL :D...they will get you to a whole other dept. Once you have THESE guys on the phone....tell them your gun is on the way and ask them what would do this.
This is the only way you will get "the best service from Taurus....its worked for me!

Shoot well.

excellent idea about Customer service. Would it be ok to quote you in the Taurus Customer Service thread on Taursforum??? Thanks.

Pt 111 Pro

I purchased the gun two years ago and the first time I shot it it worked flawlessly....Twenty years ago I purchased a Taurus and never had any trouble with that gun. I love the solid feel of the PT 111 Pro

I am completely satisfied that it will perform for self defense if needed. However this is not a easy gun to cock for some women as my wife could not pull the slide back, so a different gun will have to be purchased for her. Perhaps the new Walther 9mm PPS or Kel Tec pf-9 or a gun I used to own, ie. Walther PPK/S 380..

Happy shooting and keep alert for the anti gunners like certain secretaries of state or eric...
