The contention of small caliber semi-autos preference continues.

Do you prefer .22LR or .25ACP for lightweight minimal self defense ?

It is the intent of the OP to obtain opinions re: in the same gun, whether .22 or .25 is preferred, and why ?

Hands down the .22LR. You can get 40 grain bullets traveling at upwards of 2,000 fps. Really a badass round. And, with multiple rounds, rapid fire, deadly.

I Have a two fold answer for this one...!

I have both of these guns in .22 and .25 in Taurus as well as Beretta.
The .25 acp in most firearms has a greater reliability than the rimfire counterpart!

However a good quality CCI round like maxi mag closes this gap very well.

I would choose the .22 as a self defense round between the two choices for sure.

I carry a Beretta Minx almost 24 - 7 and it is a .22 Short With CCI Hollow Point
(1105 FPS) along with whatever my other CCW I am carrying.

Thanks.
To sum up, you believe .22LR in the same gun, beats .25ACP?

Me too. I guess I made the right choice. Also, I like the tip up barrel Beretta and Taurus both have.

I have the PT-22 and love it. I'd choose it over the .25 for defense for two reasons:

(slightly) better ballistics, and more-readily-available ammunition (which is also cheaper.)

Normandy is stretching quite a bit; there are no rounds I can think of that would even come close to 2K FPS from a pistol, but they can be downright zippy. The CCI Stinger, a 36-grain HP hyper-vel load, is rated at about 1600 FPS, and that's from a rifle barrel.

But, I'd like to score a good deal on a .25 version just because I don't have a gun in that caliber, and there's always .25ACP ammo at my local Bass Pro.

Maybe I'll just seek out a Raven at a pawnie some time..

No, don't sacrifice cost for reliability !

Get a Bauer .25ACP (Stainless Steel copy of Baby Browning) which seem to be in good supply and fairly inexpensive.

I have a Bauer and like it.

I don't have either, but wouldn't a .25 be more reliable than a .22 due to the cartridge case? Isn't a .22 subject to rim lock?

I've had 2 pt22's.
They were decently reliable, but they have no extractor. If you get a bad primer, you are SOL. It's a pain to pop open the barrel, get a fingernail under the rim, and dig it out, pop the barrel back closed, then work that tiny slide to rechamber another round. Good luck doing that under stress. If you forget and simply try the "tap and rack" you just make things worse.

It happened pretty regularly with both of mine, until I found a brand of ammo they liked.
FWIW mine chronograph at 920fps with HV cci 40gr.

Your FPS is from a rifle. Not a small pocket pistol.

25 has better penetration than 22 . Has gone 16 inches + in the jell. Most 22's are around 10 to 12 inches. Hollow points less .

Then their the reliability of rim fire verses center fire. Also 22 not as reliable feeding in a semi auto as a 25 auto. Remember Browning invented the 25 to address this problem.

I have Beretta's in 22 for practice and 25 for carry .

Iv been intressted in the pt22 for a bit but my girlfriend likes the bersa thunder 22 better so I'm at a in pass on that one.
but I will say their is some fairly hi zute 22lr out there and 22lr even the way it is seems to be more available then 25 acp something I can't say iv ever actually seen a box of in my entire life

Something no one has mentioned,,,

I own the Taurus 22-PLY and the Taurus 25-PLY,,,
Both of them have been very reliable,,,
CCI Mini Mags work perfectly.

One thing no one has mentioned,,,
The .22 is 8+1 capacity,,,
The .25 is 9+1.

I'm like Michael T. in that I practice with the .22 and carry the .25.
