Recently I have begun to move away from auto's (I'm even thinking of selling my trusty Mak!!!) and more into revolvers. I picked up a S&W 28-2 back and july and absolutly love it!

I was at a gun show last weekend and checked out a taurus tracker .44 mag with a 2" barrel. I was impressed with the quality for the money, the DA trigger was not that bad. I like the idea of a big bore snubby (I would carry .44 specials for ccw). Does anyone have this revolver and what do you think? Is it really worth the added weight/bulk over a plain old 2" model 10 or 36 .38?

tracker .44

I have the taurus tracker .44 and have used it off and on for the past 10 months. It is carryable but it the bulk makes it difficult. I use it primarily for a truck gun as I know it won't have any problem punching through a truck door should it be needed. The only other down side I've notice with mine is that the rear adjustable sight seems to be rather weak. Other than that, the gun is lightweight for a .44 and the feathered grip does a surprisingly good job of taming the recoil of magnum loads. I haven't had any issues with the gun mechanically which is more than I can say for the taurus autos.

Well no, it's not worth the extra weight and bulk to me wyncollector. But is it to you?
Sorry about the wisecrack. The fact is, I have both - a Smith .38 snubby and a Taurus Tracker. My Taurus Tracker is a .41 however, and it's my backpacking sidearm. My Smith .38 snubby is my concealed carry weapon when I'm in town.
I wish I could, but I've found no matter what I try, I can't conceal on my person anything bulkier than that little .38. Maybe it has something to do with my build or the clothes I usually wear. Possibly in the winter when I'm wearing a heavy coat or something like that, I could conceal a full size 1911, but most of the time I can't - period. If you can conceal something as bulky as a .44 Taurus Tracker, that's great. I say go for it!:)
Now as far as how I feel about the Taurus Tracker line in general, the one I have now is my second one. And I really like it. But I've found Taurus quality control to be a bit sketchy. Because I ordered my first Taurus Tracker sight unseen, and it had an 1/8" gap in one of the riflings, I won't buy a Taurus anymore without looking it over very carefully.
I also have a little Taurus .32 Magnum. In fact, I just barely took it off my hip as I came in the house and sat down in front of the computer. I carry that .32 all day every day as I'm working outside around our place here.

luckly I dont have a huge problem concealing a big gun due to my body shape and size (6'4" 275). I was just intrigued by the big bore concept. My step-dad used to carry a 1970/80's vintage charter arms bulldog .44 special. he never shot it much so he never had some of the problems that you read here. Since I shoot ALL my guns regularly I need something that will hold up...and I dont get a warm and fuzzy feeling about the newest charter offerings.

You could use the www.taurusarmed.net as a source of info. Ask the members and staff who own this model. Check the old and new threads on thses as well. If you do a search there, click on the search tab at the homepage or in the revolver section at the top of the page.
Taurus Talk at MSN is another source.

I have a Taurus model 445 - a 5-shot/.44 Special/ mid-frame/2"/ blued steel snubby that I've found to be the ideal big-bore revolver in its class. I have no use for the .357 Magnum cartridge in a snubby, let alone a .44 Magnum.

I have pocket carried the piece, but it's big for that. An inside-waistband holster works fine. These revolvers occasionally pop up, and in my opinion beat anything Taurus is making today along these lines. If I happen to find another one with a 3 or 4 inch barrel I'll jump at the chance... ;)

I strongly suggest you try the magnum loads in one. I don't like the snap back, follow up shots are really difficult. I carry a model 60 smith 357 with a 3" BBL and its very manageable , I also carry a 4" bbl Colt Anaconda in 44mag it is very manageable even with hot loads.
You should practice with the ammunition you intend to carry in your handgun, and be proficient with it.

Hey Old Fuff, I thought you were strictly an S&W man? If I can find a 445 I will most definitly check it out. Its gun show season in my neck of the woods and I'm itching to pick up another revolver:) Thanks for the input!

Hey Old Fuff, I thought you were strictly an S&W man?

Ah no..... I admit to a strong affection for older S&W revolvers, especially those made before World War Two or shortly thereafter. You might go so far as to call it an addiction. But then my head can be turned by a pretty Colt meeting the same description, and I been noticed to have a certain attraction to first generation Ruger single actions. You might say I’m fickle. :D

As for the Taurus, they sometimes make something I like that others don’t. When that's the case I can be easily pushed into making a purchase.

While I don’t like any lawyer-lock on my personal hardware, the one used by Taurus distresses me the least – perhaps because it’s so easy to neuter. If you know anyone else that’s made a blued steel, high quality .44 Special snubby the same size as the 445 let me know...

And then of course they’re Colt pistols that were made “back when...”

I have one. Very pretty, kicks hard, does not fire reliably on all cylinders in DA. Not recommended.

Old fuff, maybe you could get lucky like I recently did, (doesn't happen very offten) found a Taurus that is just right for me...a 5-shot model 441 in .44 spl. made some time in the 1990's. It still looks pretty good shape and the previous owner said it is accurate and reliable.

I'm going to show you a picture of two guns in .44 spl. Which one would you choose...

There is a WWIIish vintage M&P W/ a 5" pencil barrel that I have been looking at through the glass at a local gun shop. I have been loath to ask to check it out since I belive it would come home with me;)

I know the feeling. It would be wise to be sure you leave home without any cash, checks, or credit cards. In addition if someone like myself goes along with you temtation will be removed before it can hurt you.

Taurus 44

I have the M44C 2 1/2" Tracker in stainless and love it. CCW daily in a Kramer IWB. Trigger pull and lock up is fantastic and a great shooter. Normally carry Georgia Arms Gold Dot in .44 Special or SilverTips in 44 mag. Beware of losing your front sight pipe as the heat and blast tend to weaken it. I had to order another from Taurus for $5.00 as mine blew off at the range while shooting UMC 180's. Hot load and way too much muzzle flash and blast. Also makes a good car gun as a back up for what ever I am carrying that day.

I have an M44C in 2 inch. It is my pack gun for hiking. It is tough to conceal on your person, although I have on a few occasions shoved it in my front pocket, and wore a shirt untucked. ( I actually carried it all day at work like that once!) It isn't terribly comfortable like that, though.

Is it worth the extra weight? That's up to you. I personally feel VERY secure with a .44 special. Bill Jordan would agree :)
