Teddy Roosevelt's Suppressed 1894 Winchester

While I've read too much of history to call him my favorite President, that is very cool, and just goes to show how much sense silencers really make -- and how utterly absurd the law restricting them really is.

TR was a progressive. I never figured out how he became a hero to conservatives. Imagine Ted Kennedy with guns.

Zapping Long Island varmints with a suppressed high powered rifle... my how times have changed.

I also liked Teddy R. and I see no similarities to Ted Kennedy: However, I'm not sure if putting a silencer on a 30-30 or a .405 Winchester would suppress the report of such a firearm.

Great find! I suspect it would have at least lowered the volume a bit on the round. One thing that surprised me in reading about TR is that he wasn't a particularly good shot. His eyesight was very poor, and the optometry of the day wasn't really up to correcting it fully.

You've been listening to too much AM radio, and kindly remember that this is NOT the place to engage in political debates. Particularly anachronistic ones.

I got to handle a similar Winchester 94 in .32 Winchester about 30 years ago. The owner (who shall remain namless), an aquaintence residing in NW Colorado at the time, had had it handed down in the family to him. It was a takedown model, with the short mag like Teddy's, and also had a fitted Maxim silencer, that had the interrupted threading (IIRC, just a quarter turn locked it on). On top of that, the entire takedown kit had a fitted canvas wrap type case, that looked every bit as old and authentic to the gun. Didn't get to shoot it, but man, that was a neat piece of history. PS: I think the efficiency of Maxim's suppressors, even on centerifres, was pretty impressive, even by today's standards. I'm sure there are scientific comparisons out there.

Reminds me of an exchange from the movie "Air America":

"Nice silencer."

"I am a considerate man. If i wanna go out on my private miniature golf course and shoot lizards all night, that's no reason to keep the neighbors awake..."

My wife's cousin in Norway has a supressed 7mm-08. Supressed hunting rifles are the norm over there.
