Columbia teen in serious condition after apparent accidental shooting

(Columbia) June 17, 2004 - Columbia Police are investigating an apparent accidental shooting incident Wednesday evening in the North Columbia area.

Cola Taylor, 17, was taken to Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital after being shot in the head in the Greenview area of Farrow Road. Taylor is reported to be listed in serious condition, but emergency officials Wednesday night say he is expected to survive.

While witnesses at first told authorities the shooting was part of a drive-by, police say they later changed their story.

It turns out, investigators say, one of the people in the vehicle in which Taylor was riding was handing a handgun that accidentally discharged, hitting Taylor in the head.

No charges have been filed at this time, but police are continuing their investigation.

Always follow rules 1, 2, and 3... Of course I'm wondering why there was a loaded gun in car to begin with.

You have to be 21 to buy a pistol from a Federal dealer. You can own one at 18 if it is a gift or passed down, etc.

You can own a rifle at 18--I'm pretty sure you have to be 21 for a handgun. No matter how you get it.

AIDS, firearms, not looking both ways when crossing the street and stupidity. These are killing more kids. Inject a little chlorine into the gene pool.

Morons. I hate my generation. Good thing some of these imbeciles are leaping off the mortal coil before they actually reach an age at which they can do real damage. Of course, their Son-Of-Baby-Boomer III parents are already laying the groundwork for them, they just have to grin and show off their [stupidity-inflicted] bullet wounds for the camera, and the litigation and legislation will follow.

Sorry, really, really crappy mood tonight.

What incrediblly unfortunare timing to have been handling the gun at exactly the time it accidentally discharged.

"Yes sir. That's what happened. I was just holding my gun when suddenly it fired off three rounds into the guy's brain. Accidentally."

Man, this reminds me of a true story. I started to turn it into a short story, but stalled. Mind if I share?

A Bullet in the Hand (with apologies to Tobias Wolff)

I’m sitting in the waiting room of the hospital when the guy walks in, a big bloody white towel wrapped around his hand and I think, stabbing or shooting. My mom is in because she has asthma and it’s pretty bad all of a sudden, and I’m driving her to the hospital at one in the morning...

So this half-assed gang banger-looking guy, maybe in his early twenties, Mexican, comes in with his girlfriend and sits down in the plastic chair one chair away from me and next thing you know there’s a Sheriff’s deputy sitting beside him with his big green jacket and his little black leather notepad. Thinning blond hair and a nameplate that reads “Kirby.†He looks familiar, like someone I went to high school with. Or maybe I’ve hit an age where I’ve seen so many people that everyone looks like someone else to me. The deputy asks the banger what happened, and he spins a tale that’s not detailed enough in the right places, and too detailed in the wrong ones. The story was something like he was walking down the street minding his own business when a car pulled up and someone inside asked him a question. A brown car. Four guys. He looked in to hear what they said, and he saw a flash of metal. Gun. He recoiled, put his hands up, and bam he took a round through the palm of his left hand. No, he didn’t know who they were. Never seen them before. Brown car. Oldsmobile? So the deputy gets up and goes out to his car, and the first thought on my mind as I watch the banger look at his girl like he’s worried that he might not have said the right thing is, “That [idiot] shot himself.â€

I don’t know it because something he said tipped me off; I know it because the likelihood of this joker taking a bullet in the center of his hand from a guy in the back seat of a car is pretty slim, and it’s much more likely that he did it himself. Make a T with your hands, like “time out.†See how easy that is? Bam. Probably got some tearing of the palm from the expanding gasses. I’m thinking he was probably [messing] around with some [crappy] little .22, his hands moved to a natural position and POP, there it went. I wonder what happened to the bullet.

And sure enough, Deputy Kirby comes back in, all pissed off because they’ve been doing felony stops on brown cars in east Bakersfield and he just figured out that the kid is lying to him...

In NJ you can own a handgun at 18 and can even buy one from a private person......so long as you do the usual dance to the gods to get your pistol permit and wait a good 3 months like everyone else. :banghead:
