Tell Me About Ruger's GP-100...

There's one GP100 that's "extra special" in my book: the 6" half-lug. No longer made, it has a light-barrel feel. It feels as "quick in the hand" as a 4" full-lug GP100.

If I was shopping for a GP, that's the one I'd want. Failing that, take a 6" full-lug and chop most of the lug off.

Yesterday I got the opportunity to handle a 4" satinless GP100 (with the older, wood insert grips), and I've got to say that I was VERY impressed with it! It fit my hand very well, and I really like the heft and looks of it. I will definitely buy one (I'll find a NIB one with the older type grips), but that's going to have to wait until the beginning of June, because I just bought this beauty:

I'm a sucker for case hardening. :D

Again, thanks for all the helpful/informative replies.

The Ruger GP100...in any size barrel or configuration...is a piece of Art, a tool of war, and a weapon to be reckoned with.

Personally, I think it is the finest made American Revolver made today...I like my S&W but I love my Ruger!

I got the 4" SS model a few months ago, and love it. I wear it on my hip all day when I'm hiking, and don't think the weight is a problem at all.

If you are looking at Hogue grips, you don't have to go the rubber route. They make some outstanding exotic wood grips as well. Here's my SS 4" GP100 with Hogue's ironwood grip:

NOTE: They come in finger grooved or smooth, checkered or not, and in about 8 kinds of wood. Just checked their site and Kingwood is currently not available.

Where is the best price on a GP100? I like the 6" SS version.
I just ordered a GP 100 SS 6" Barrel Friday. The revolver cost me $475 before tax. I think that is a decent price. I may have been able to find one cheaper but it would have been on line then I would have had to pay shipping plus an FFL fee.

This will be my first Ruger. I have 5 S&W Pistols and I strongly considered another S&W. I was able to handle my brother-in-laws GP 100 a few times and it is sweet. His has had a trigger job and a good one at that. Other reasons that I wanted the GP 100 6" was, I wanted a shooter for the range. I wanted a revolver that I can wear in a belt holster that will have a desent range to it. I have several CCW pistols and they are good for that.
