Here is a realistic cost calculator for shotgun.

The AA hulls were free (picked up at a regional collegiate shoot for free. Another fun gun club member just gave me another #1400.

Cost per box is 6.95. $45 per 1000 primers, $55 per 25# of shot, $13 per 1000 wads.

So, a flat is $69.50 for 1 1/8 oz loads. $65.20 for 1 oz loads per flat.

As others have mentioned, volume is required to make the numbers work. When doing volume you'll want a progressive for sure. Buy components in big quantities....5000-to-10,000 at a time. Been pleased with the Mec Grabber.....but often wished it were motorized or went with a Ponsness Warren reloader. Problem you'll have now is finding the "unicorn" primers. Picked up some last week, first I've seen in over two years.

thanks for the calculator !

I’m not crazy concerned about penny pinching, I think it’s going to be fun making my own shells

Forgot to tell you; Write or email to Alliant and Hodgden and MEC. They will send you a powder manual telling you which powder and wad and primer goes with each shell type called a recipe, just like baking a cake. put shot in shot bottle, put powder in powder bottle, put bushing in bar that drops a certain powder charge. The red bar is calculated to drop certain weight of shot. You may want to weigh a few powder charges for they seldom come out consistently the way you want. At every beginning of loading lift shot bottle (hinged to go backwards) back and forth to agitate the powder. DON'T LIFT POWDER BOTTLE. All the weight is in the shot bottle otherwise you may rip the powder bottle off the machine(you might destroy a $10 bottle and make a big mess). Many people run a ground wire off their machine to eliminate any static charge. There are some accessories you may like too, like auto primer feeder(600 model still takes metal feeder) and shell stacker, both of which will help but not absolutely necessary. Any other questions come back to us.
