Tell me about slings

I searched and couldn't find too much on them, but the CMP stresses their importance, and I saw a thread talking about the "shooting sling" and the "tactical sling" and the "3-point sling" so what is each one used for, and which type will I want for competition, and which for carrying a gun through the woods? Is the tactical sling just painted black and endorsed by Gecko45 along with a $20 price increase?

Slings have different uses.

In High Power Competition, it is the primary method of support through equipment.

In hunting and duty (i.e. military), it serves as a method of carrying the rifle and also serves as an option for artificial support.

3-point slings are great for patrol use since there are various ways to carry a rifle using a 3-point sling.

As far as 'black' slings, the only reason I bought a black Turner Saddlery NM sling is to match the rifle. The price is the same as a tan sling.

"...making a "tactical" joke..." There's no such thing as a 'tactical' anything. HAHAHAHA!!! I slay me.
"...which type will I want for competition..." A shooting sling. Loops around your upper arm and provides a really solid hold. Mind you, the slings used on an M1 Rifle can be adjusted to shoot with and lug the rifle around.
"...tactical sling..." See my hilarious first sentence. Although some of 'em let you carry the rifle across your chest. You probably don't want a 10 pound rifle there though.
"...3-point slings..." Fancier "tactical" sling.

I'm thinking that a 3-point may be the way to go, as I could carry it backpack style, with which I could carry heavier weights more comfortably.

a 2 point goes over your back nice and snug; easier than a 3 point IMO.

Can a 2-point be worn backpack style comfortably though, a strap over each sholder?
The spectre website makes it look like it can, with the "climber's carry" method.
Also, what's the differance between a 2-point and 3-point? It looks like a 3-point has an extra strap?
Also, my 870 came with a sling, is that a 2-point?

And, also, what is a "ching sling"? I hear it helps in offhand shooting.

I have a 3 point that can be used to carry the rifle either in front of you or used like a traditional carry sling with the rifle over your shoulder. I honestly can't remember the brand. It might be a Blackhawk.
