That is too bad. Hopefully she will get off on probation. Then again, this is a perfect example of why you should read the gun laws for any place you intend to visit.

Malum prohibitum (plural mala prohibita, literal translation: "wrong [as or because] prohibited") is a Latin phrase used in law to refer to conduct that constitutes an unlawful act only by virtue of statute, as opposed to conduct evil in and of itself, or malum in se.

This.
Copied from a comment under the article. (That means it's not mine.)
You'd think that, with all of those fancy high paid attorneys in New York, someone could find a case to stop the unfair laws.

I'm sorry, but has this broad been living under a rock or in a cave?

It's NEW YORK CITY for crying out loud. Would she have tried walking through air port security with her gun? Does her mind function at all outside of her medical school?

Flame me all you want, but it sounds like a total idiot got herself in trouble by not bothering to think at all. Just like that idiot reverend last year who got arrested in Washington .D.C. by carrying guns into the city "because back home in Tennesee everyone carries. Yeah, right. I can only wonder what gthe judge will say.

I got no sympathy for her.

Carl.

1. It is Bloomberg's New York City.
2. If you're going to carry a firearm, it's your responsibility to know the local laws.

I hope it turns out OK for her.

You mean the NEW ones, or the ones written a couple hundred years ago by the founding fathers ?

On a radio news blurb i just heard this, it said that she could get three years in jail or more, thats rediculous for a person who probably has never done anything illegal in their life. Plus the citizens of new york would have to pay $30,000 plus per year to incarcerate her, a forth year medical student no less. I hope this ends the carear of that da & forces the issue of states having to honor other states carry permits. Much like drivers license, which also have different requirements in other states.

I have LEO ID and I won't take a pistol into NYC. My understanding is that since 9/11 a badged officer is supposed to be able to carry anywhere except Federal propery like courthouses and such. Still, with that liberal crowd up there, I did not, and would not in the future, risk it.

Yea, she was foolish, she wasn't careful and got taken by people who care nothing for individual rights, but so what? An evil law is an evil law. And it is evil, because it harms a (AFIK) decent person and does nothing other than entrench those who ascribe to themselves and monopolize the privilege to exercise a fundamental human right. In this case, the law is more of a trouble than the "criminal". In this case, application of the law makes this world a worse place to live in.

You don't have to sympathize with her, but what happened was injustice at the most fundamental level. She has to do three years just so a small group of people can continue to keep power on who gets to exercise their rights?

^ This is right.

She should have known better, but she also shouldn't have had to know better. The 2nd Amendment should be the only "permit" we ever need.

NYC has MANDATORY 3 year minimum, Plaxico, T.I. pleaded and still did about 2 years

Cut the find folks of Tinner a break, they are honest and hardworking but not as Globalist or as in tune with the rest of the nation North of the Mason Dixion Line.

Sad story. True she should have known better. Hopefully, HR 822 will get approved and signed into law. And Hopefully they will be able to postpone her court appearance long enough for the DA to realize that this is not worth persuing.

No, she's going to do three years because she broke a very well known law in one of the most anti gun cities in the free world, run by a socialist menace named Bloomberg. Is there a CCW carrier anywhere that has taken the classes, and not know to check the local laws first? Is there a gun person anywhere that knows not to take a gun to NYC, Washington D.C., Boston or Obamaville AKA/Chicago?

I love my guns and shooting as much as the next guy, but life does not revolve around them. If I'm going to NYC, or London, or other places, I don't carry anything that is illegal in those locals. This woman is almost 40 years of age, a medical university student, so she can read and comprehend news reports.

This is not a question of injustice, it's one of a stupid person breaking a gun law in a very well known anti gun place. As much as you may wish it so, local laws still hold sway. This woman is learning a lesson the hard way. If you don't want to play in a crooked poker game, don't play cards in a back room with people you don't know. If you don't want to go to jail, don't go breaking laws in places you visit. Life is simple with a little common sense. Something apparently lacking in med school.

I'm sorry, this was one dumb broad.

Carl.

I spent my first 35 years in New York and the surrounding suburbs. It is a miserable place for gun lovers. While Bloomberg is a jerk, possession of a handgun without a NY CCW was a mandatory 1 year in prison before Bloomberg even came to NY.

You want to google 'LEOSA' for the details.

I just visited the 9/11 memorial yesterday and you would have to be an idiot to bring a gun into it. You literally have to go through airport style security and they have signs all over the place. Here is a pic I took yesterday while we were about to go into security.

Correction: Bloomberg is a plutocratic fascist, not a socialist. He also has fantasies about running for president on some third-party ticket next year. How are his anti-gun rantings going to play in Middle America?

Maybe, but she was still acting very tragically stupidly. In my Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit course they told us which in which states our HCP was honored. This woman's instructors should have done the same.

I'm not sure her judgement is good enough for her to be trusted caring for patients.

if they charge her for having a gun, she may have a Constitutional conflict, if she is charged for bringing one into a prohibited place, she is likely sunk.
