I gotta get my grandkids outta Texas.

God Bless Florida.
I never ever thought I would ever say that.

If one ever finds themselves with the desire/need to own a gun having to wait five days to take it home and 30 days to carry it isnt going to be much help. Requiring qualification of this nature largely eliminates this option and results in fewer people having permits.

That is the best argument that I've ever heard for getting guns and ammo in your hands/closet/safe in advance of any trouble. This is like people in hurricane or earthquake zones not having guns or ammo - DUH, the government shuts the gunshops down during civil emergencies. Same for riots (hello, Detroit?)...get yourself well equipped in advance, and advise your friends to do the same.

I've got all the guns I need (notice I didn't say "want"), and plenty of ammo for each. I even have reloading dies, bullets, primers and powder for each, in the event that I somehow or other don't have ammo and an emergency strikes. Worst case is that I go out to the garage for a while and make more ammo - and having cases cleaned, deprimed, resized (for rifles), belled (for handguns) and re-primed is a good head start.

You have to attend a 4-hour class to requalify. You do NOT have to requalify on the range. Note that the initial qualification is a joke for anyone with even a little bit of practice under their belts. My 72-year-old father, who hasn't shot a gun in probably 30 years, could qualify with a very high score without any problems.

...and if someone can't pass the numbnuts test at the end of the class, I'm not real certain that I'd like them out on the street carrying a gun - they'd have to be so mentally impaired that they shouldn't drive, and maybe not even cook or go to the bathroom alone. It is THAT easy.

requal update

I did my initial in April with a friend who was doing his requal. We newbies started at 0800 and went 'til lunch. Requals joined us after lunch for a few more hours in the classroom, the newbies and requals all went to the range to shoot. My friend shot a 249 (out of 250) while I shot a 246.

I didn't think that the requals had to shoot. In any case, the day that I can't requal at the range is the day that I'll stop carrying.

BTW, I got a 250 on my initial (though maybe it should've been a 249, since on of the shots on the border between 4 and 5 points was probably a 4).

It does suprise me sometimes that gun laws in TX are a bit more strict than many others. A lot of people consider TX to be the gun-wielding wild west without any laws. :)

The good news is we are moving forwards and not backwards and hopefully we will start lifting these tedious restrictions through legislative effort. Our legislature has a strong pro-gun leaning, even though we do have people from the bigger cities cry 'blood in the streets' whenever they get a chance.

Fun Factoid...

In Texas there is nol limit on the number of guns one can conceal with a valid Texas CCW license;) .... I plan to go for the record in winter :D  (does my MP-AR15 pistol count as two guns :scrutiny:  )

Fun Idea Just Hit Me...

I think that I will use my MP-AR15pistol to requalify(with a red dot or maybe a fixed magnification optic of 2x). It will be worth it just to get the funny looks and for the Crocodile Dundee effect(you know the," Thats not a pistol, THIS IS a PISTOL :what:!.

Just the thought of it puts one of these ,:D, on my face!

You WILL have to shoot when you requal.

Also worth noting that even though you must qualify with a .32ACP or greater, you may carry ANY caliber.
