So I live in Texas and absolutely LOVE open carry! it is soo much more comfortable than concealed carry... I don't have to argue with people who let their dog run freely and think that leash laws don't apply to them.... I just simply ask if that is their dog and they get the hint instantly... I tend to get great service wherever I go... I know some people are not comfortable with open carry and just want me to leave... odd thing is that I live next to Houston and in the 3.5 months of Open carry.. I haven't seen anyone else open carry besides me... I almost feel that Gov. Abbott signed the law just for me which is cool... :neener: but is there anyone else here in Texas who open carries on a regular basis? :D

What are the chances this sentiment on the convenience of OC starts gaining traction as the weather warms? Pure coincidence, I'm sure ;)

I like the flexibility the new laws provide. It's easier to adjust clothing for weather changes while I'm out and about. However, I'd estimate I conceal at least 98% of the time. It's natural to me as a personal choice for OPSEC.

I'm not getting what any of this has to with carrying open vs concealed.

An armed society is a polite society.

I have been Open Carrying since Jan. 1, but I have not seen anyone else but my SIL and I that have availed themselves of the change. I have had a few positive comments and a few strange looks, but no one has approached me with a negative comment or action.

I wish more people in the DFW metromess would OC. I'm starting to feel alone!

I hope you know the context of that quote, because Heinlein wasn't saying that an armed society is by de facto polite. Rather he was saying that politeness is a natural survival tactic when everyone has been killed off or eliminated except for all the alpha predators.

The book the quote comes from, Beyond This Horizon, features a society based on eugenics, controlled breeding, gene manipulation and some good old government genocide. The to make it more interesting, the genetically "inferior" are rounded up and kept in people zoos and duels to the death are legal for the slightest offenses. What you end up with is a society of super lethal, super intelligent super people. Kind of like a room full of Alpha lions all staring at each other trying to figure out who the weakest is so they can kill him.

The portion of the passage that people should really pay attention to is at the end, not the beginning:

" But to stay alive as an armed citizen a man has to be either quick with his wits or with his hands, preferably both."

Heinleins quote is actually a warning that if you are going to live in a society where everyone has the ability to kill, you better be real good at killing and kissing butt or you're going to end up a dead man.

A society Khan Noonien Singh would love dearly.

First let me say I suspect this is a troll post.

On the off chance it's not what are you going to do when someone either refuses to leash their dog or calls the cops and tells them you're armed and behaving in a threatening manner?

TITLE 9. OFFENSES AGAINST PUBLIC ORDER AND DECENCY of the Texas Penal Code specifically CHAPTER 42. DISORDERLY CONDUCT AND RELATED OFFENSES section 1 paragraph 8 (8) displays a firearm or other deadly weapon in a public place in a manner calculated to alarm;

Let us know how that works out for you

I get it. It's an example of OC'ers who enjoy being passive aggressive & also enjoy intimidating people & making them nervous...gives them a sense of power. Also satisfies their craving for attention.

Since you can only open carry. If you have a concealed carry permit. Silliest law I have ever heard of. . I suspect most will just keep concealed. We have had open carry in KY since 1792 .NO Permit needed. IN our state Constitution. That's 44 years before the Alamo. Get a concealed permit to open carry .How about a class A Commercial Drivers license just to drive you car.
You all need to do some serious kicking out people in Austin .

I am a Texan and live in Texas. I love Texas. I thought that the OC law was a good one. Now, I'm starting to wonder... It is the JohnnyKs out there that make all of us look like passive aggressive, and maybe not so passive, jerks.

Hopefully this thread is an early April fools joke. Come on Johnny, fess up!

That's how it came across to me as well considering the wording used by the OP. I was curious to see if the OP would explain his thoughts.

I hope I'm completely misinterpreting this comment.

These are not good reasons to open carry, and if you are implying that it's a good idea to exploit the presence of an openly carried gun to intimidate people into not arguing or providing better service then, in my opinion, you don't have any business carrying, or even owning, guns.

That's incorrect. It was a Concealed Handgun License(CHL) until Dec 31, 2015. On Jan 1, 2016, it became a License To Carry (LTC). Period. If one already held a CHL, it's now treated as an LTC until renewal time.

I'm not passive aggressive... I have gone thru 3 cans of pepper get on loose dogs in my neighborhood in the past 3 years... I am not going to get bit by a loose dog with no leash or collar... I came super close to shooting one aggressive dog 6 months ago who wasn't contained but at the last second the dog's owner whistled him back home... I gave the owner .02 about keeping his dog on his property... I would have shot my aggressive neighbor's dog a month ago who came into MY yard and started growling aggressively at me but it was the only time I wasn't carrying... I was only going to my truck in my driveway..

sorry to burst your bubble but I'm no attention seeker... I just love open carry and feel like I'm the only one in the greater Houston area...

a true attention seeker would walk around the neighborhood with an AK and a pocket full of dog treats... :neener:

If the hint they're getting is due to, or enforced by, your open carry posture, that seems to infer aggression on your part with a weapon. I hope that's not it.

IANAL, but also keep in mind, in Tx there aren't any statutes justifying defense with deadly force against an animal such as a dog. I'd recommend researching the legalities involved in defending yourself with deadly force to better prepare should the moment of need arise.

Next door to Texas, (Oklahoma) is working on Open Carry without a permit legislation. If that passes in Oklahoma, then maybe it would be a good time to try similar legislation in Texas.

Oklahoma: "Unlicensed Open Carry" Passes House

one great thing about 50 states is that one state can pass something and we can all see if it works or not.

Its one of the best things about our system.

These days too many things get passed at the federal level so there is no way to see if another way would have been better.

Open carry is one example, legalization of marijuana is another.

I have spoken to sheriff many times and using whatever means necessary for self defense of family is legal...

Heinlein (to go back early) is a great role model as later he extolled the virtues of incest with his mother and sisters (who were clones - whatever).

His hero in Beyond this Horizon contemplated giving up carrying a gun because he thought it led to stupid duels. As stated, that culture was a pretty horrific tyranny.

I have not seen one instance of open carry here. I asked the checker at Cabelas (who sees if a gun is loaded) how many he has seen. It is just a few - and he said they were posturing. That's a hint.
