I have been thinking of booking a predator hunt in TX some time next year. Anyone have any info on what is the best season, what to avoid and what to look for?

Any info appreciated.

If foxes are around, they can be called in any time, look for big bouldery areas. I noticed a couple of years ago that I had my best luck calling coyotes in the morning during a new moon and in the evening during a full moon. Thats my .02

My theory, FWIW, is that during the new moon, predators have to work longer for a meal due to reduced visibility to spot prey. During the full moon, prey critters can see better and predators again must work longer.

Foxes, coyotes, cougars.

Personally, I've done best with a waxing moon. Start calling or watching bait in the late afternoon.

The best time of the year to call coyotes for high numbers is in early fall. September through about early December. This due to the fact that the young ones are not yet fully educated and respond to a call much easier than later in the season. If you are hunting for pelt quality you'll want to hunt later in the season when the average temperatures are colder. This makes for a rich, thick pelt.

The main factor in quality calling however is location. I've been on some low pressure, high critter population places where it simply didn't matter what time of the year or day it was. I've called on several ranches in Texas where it could be the middle of the day in mid summer and if you blew on a predator call you'd generally get multiple coyotes coming in.

Hunting public or other high pressure land can make coyote calling very scant and frustrating.
