I went into the hospital today to have an MRI at my doctor's behest, because of my constant headaches. So we get to the room with the machine, and the nurse/dude that does the MRI procedure says, "You'll need to empty your pockets, and take out any keys, coins, guns, knives, whatever." That kind of caught my attention.

"Sounds like you've had someone bring a gun in here before," says I, dipping my toe into the water -- testing the conversation.

"Well, you've just got to cover your bases, because of that stupid concealed carry law." :scrutiny:

"So does that happen a lot?"

"Uh, kind of. I've had police and detectives come in with a gun in their pant leg, or whatever."

At that point, I just gave up the conversation. If it is just a common trait in the medical profession to hate anything that can cause injury, why aren't more doctors complaining about "those stupid automotive laws," or "those stupid rodeos," or what have you?

I guess this is just a rant, but that really pissed me off. :fire: Thoughts?

Wes

P.S. I later learned that he was a student at the U of U medical school, otherwise known as the liberal epicenter of Utah. :barf:

With a MRI, no ferrous metal can be present. No pacemakers, no stents, no filters, no pins, no plates, no rods, and definitely nothing in your pokets or holster. Many people in the Health Care Professions, including myself carry, and shoot. Just because you ran into a weiner doesn't mean we all are.

a lil' off topic, but what kinda headaches do you get?

Are they the type that makes you completely feel like crap and resort to vomitting in the end or just random migranes?

Or are they just regular headaches that excedrin helps relieve?

I'm in nursing school right now and work in the ER as a nursing assistant. I know quite a bit of nurses and doctors into firearms and hunting. Several I know of have their CHL including me. There are probaly more than you think.

Isn't there some organization for pro gun doctors? Sour grape in every bunch lol. Speaking of metal and MRIs, I remember a young kid was killed not too long ago when they forgot to take an oxygen tank from the room, I guess it got sucked right in to the opening.

My PA is a shooter, he shoots tactical rifles and shotguns and others, i see him exclusivly,we are trying to get our schedules together so as we can go shooting:D

yes, all around the board. I have a little nagging headache absolutely all of the time, which turns into tension headaches, or more often, big bad migraines that sometimes hurt so bad that I end up throwing up.

Or are they just regular headaches that excedrin helps relieve?
Oooooh, no. Tylenol and Advil do nothing. In fact, Lortab [which the doc prescribed me for "the really bad ones,"] is like a sugar pill. Percocet helps sometimes. For the bad ones, I have to go to the doctor and get a shot. And *even that* only works sometimes.

They're nasty boogers.

Please, don't get me wrong -- I'm not trying to say that everyone in the medical profession is an anti, but it seems like they're either really into shooting, or completely anti -- no in-between. I know that's an assumption that can't be totally true, but all of my experience points to that. And I'm not complaining that they won't let me take my pocket change and keys into the chamber, :uhoh: it's just his openly ignorant views pissed me off.

I had an MRI two yrs ago. The nurse led me into a room, explained the procedure, then got out a wooden box with a lock lid. "Put all your stuff in ...keys, wallet, phone ect. Two knives, and three .45 mags later she just grined and locked it up. I expected to see security waiting when I came out...but they were no where in sight. Must have been used to it, (I had locked my gun in my vehicle)
Mark.

IIRC, there was a thread on TFL about a police detective who wore his Colt Commander into an MRI. Took them DAYS to get it detached from the machine. The magnetic field was strong enough to rearrange the metal composition enough to make the gun too dangerous to fire.

I had one 2 months ago and they were set up with locked changing rooms. After leading me to the machine, she asked if I had any BB's stuck in my skin or had ever worked with sheet metal and had any slivers stuck in my skin or eyes. She told me that the machine likely would not pull a BB out if the skin had healed over it.

<--Also a nursing student

How funny would it have been if after the doc made the "stupid CHL" statement you dropped your gear belt and handed it to him? You missed a fine oppertunity. You should have been carrying.

funny...

... but I'm unable to forget about the "no ferrous meatl with MRI". My dad's been doing polishing for so long, an MRI would be a quick execution: his lungs are FULL of steel dust, and his chest would probably shred if he had one. And I'm probably not much safer, having been doing the same job for close to 20...

Wes,

I have the same thing. Sadly, AFAIK, there isnt a cure for it yet. I've gone through numerous doctors, MRI's and nothing works.

This sounds like your problems are a result of "Cluster Headaches".

Give this site a look, its dedicated towards this type of headache/migrane. It'll show you that both me and you are not alone w/ this... and numerous other people have this "condition".

http://www.clusterheadaches.com/

They also have a message board which is quite helpful and provides great information

Good luck man and stay strong!:)

Wouldnt have happened if it was a Glock.

:)

Hmmmm

I remember a story a few years back.... some kid was getting an MRI. Turns out a maintenence worker left on of those BIG METAL cylinders in the room back accident. The ones that contain some sort of gas. Anyway, as soon as the MRI was turned on this BIG METAL cylinder came flying across the room and killed the kid. Those MRI's are like super-big magnets!

Sorry for you, boys. My wife got the same malady, and I've seen more than once how they vomit. To think even the young are not spared. And thanks for the links. Perhaps they can be of use, though the condition is the very devil and doesn't appear to be curable.

Best regards

Shoot! I was expecting you to pull out your piece when he said that!!

As for the headaches.. There are CURES... the doctors won't tell you, because there's no money in it for them, or they don't know about it..

The last time I was sick, (even a cold) was in maybe 2nd grade.. I NEVER get sick, and that's not due to luck.. Headaches (the really bad ones) are due to quite a few reasons, and if you really want to get rid of them, PM me, I'll walk ya through it.. and give you some sites..

Shoot! I was expecting you to pull out your piece when he said that!!

Twelve more months... then we'll see about that. Until then, if I were to carry, it would be illegal, so I wouldn't be too privy to pulling out my piece. I hate gun laws. :banghead:

I just had another one today which made me go home early from school.

An all too common occurence for me, when I was in school... heck, even last year at college.

I'll go check my PMs now. :D
