e'trode: I bet it has - even way up here, things are getting hairy. From home invasions, to carjackings and beyond. Here, all I know for sure is that you must be "in control" of your firearm at all times and leaving it in a car is a huge no-no. I wonder if even my messenger bag on the seat is legal. The laws are so convoluted up here that it defies logic - demanding they be clarified often leads to more laws... :( Massachusetts - the state where revolution from tyranny was born, is a far cry from those pivotal moments in our history...

jt1: Those look more within reach, (pardon the pun) and I will add them to my list - thank you and thanks DA!

Let me know what you end up with in a cross draw for driving.

http://www.activeprogear.com/model17.html

I have been thinking about this recently. Particularly since I am going to be driving 1000 miles over the next few days.

The fist is a nice looking rig.

BTW Always looking for clothing that makes for good concealment wear. This guy is doing a bunch of covert Government Gear.
I'll bet a X42 would hide away nicely in one of the pockets. Now if I could just remember which one I put it in.

DA/Mark - I just ordered the model 17 from active pro gear. Got free shipping :). I like the quick on/off feature. If it is any good I will order another as a weak side back-up. If not I'll try the FIST (probably will anyway). Report to follow.

...mixed reviews on amazon...
Nem - Just looked at some of the reviews, some seem valid to a degree and some seem to be the result of a quick reading of the material, this is the kind of book you have to study, it is somewhat repetitive but there is a reason for it. They are trying to instill the basics and for some folks (like me) it takes awhile to sink in. Interestingly, Mr. Jordon's take on point shooting is quite the opposite from Col. Applegate's in several major respects, and yet they blend together to form a very solid technique that works well for me.

I just posted this in the J frame prices thread:

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=273795

"I have been shopping for a new 642 in the north Mississippi/Memphis, TN area. Locally I can get one for $460, and in Southaven, MS (just south of Memphis) I can get one for $399 at Sportsman's Warehouse. Is $399 in line with current prices?"

I think the above posts answered my question.

Joined The Club

I joined the 642 Club a few months ago but am just getting around to posting. I've put about 250 rounds through it and so far am extremely happy with it. I put some CTL 405's on it and carry it in a Mika pocket holster (I have my MN concealed carry permit). I'm very happy to be a member of the club! Here is a picture from a recent session at the range.

price check!@!!

Hey Ras.,
Here in Baton Rouge I just bought my 642 new for $399.

I looked at all the stores around and that was the going price. Some had it for a little more.

Hey Electrode, I heard the crime rate in N.O. was up as a result of the police confiscating private firearms right after the hurricane.

Price check here is the same $400 as elsewhere - at gunstores and 'Academy Sports' chains. This weekend's gunshow - 642 $430-$520; 642 CT $650-$760! DREAMERS?

I talked with the folks from GA Arms at that show... they think $9/50 for their #G38E 158gr +P LSWC is fair... of course, only on the bag does it mention 'HP'! I chrono-ed the very similar Remi's R38S12 at 840 fps from my 2" 10 - and the G38E's at 832 fps - pretty good, considering the Remi's are ~$30/50 now.

I was in the Cabela's in Buda, TX this weekend and they had a sale on the
M442 for $379.00, don't know how long the sale runs.

Welcome U-235!

Welcome aboard! Glad you finally joined us! Isn't the 642 just awesome?!? How are you finding using your CT's? Anyway, welcome again - pull up a chair and set a spell....

Crimson Trace 405's

Hi MassMark,

I really like the CT 405's, the grip fits my hand well and they do a good job in soaking up the recoil. The laser is great, I shoot much better with it.

I am really happy with my 642 and am more likely to carry it because it is so simple just to put in in a pocket (in a Mika pocket holster). I am carrying more often now.

Hey Stainz.,
Yea the crime is up in N.O. since the legal guns were picked up by the police. Only the gang bangers, dealers, etc. are armed now. I don't go around Baton Rouge empty handed let alone N.O.

I never realy liked the place (N.O.) before Kat. came and I like it even less now.

Anyway it just gives me a great reason to buy more guns like my nice 642 and practice, practice, practice.

P.S. sorry bout the downer comment.

Overwhelmed at work ... just checking in briefly for some worthwhile (diversion) reading about one of my favorite guns ...

As an educator who purposefully builds some redundancy into his classes

I can relate to that can relate to that.

I can relate to synthesis, also.

Thesis + antithesis = synthesis.

Ammo trouble, maybe?

Last week I picked up two 100-round boxes of Wally World Winchester wadcutter .38s. Say that ten times fast! On Sunday I went to my friend's farm, where he has a makeshift range.

Fired 50, well 49. One round failed, and it looked like it had been struck lightly. Rotated cylinder so it would come up again, it fired successfully. Later, a second round failed. Only it did so three times. Still looks like it was lightly struck. This is the first time putting $0.25 ammo through it as opposed to the $1.00 ammo it usually sees. Never a failure with the premium stuff.

A friend says I should tighten the hammerspring screw under my grips, but I am hesitant to make any changes. Do you have any recommendations? I feel like I should just forget about it. Also, he recommended 30 second waits after a misfire like I had. I didn't see a problem with the 5 seconds I was waiting to rotate the cylinder back. And no offense, but I sure as hell am not waiting 30 seconds in a "situation" before pulling the trigger again; I doubt I'd even wait fiVe seconds. Tell me if I'm nuts.

The strain screw in an S&W secures and puts the pre-load on the hammer's leaf spring. It should always be tight - unless you are removing the spring. It is not an 'adjustment'! Of course, as it is only found in the K, L, & N frames, you won't have one in your J-frame 642 - it has a wound spring. Your problem could possibly be a 'cut' or reduced effort spring from an 'action' job by a prior owner - or a substandard firing pin. While most of my K,L,&N-frames are for 'fun' - and have reduced effort springs, marrying them to my Federal-primed homebrew ammo, my PD 2" 10, 296, & 642 were left stock - for insurance they'd pop anyone's primers.

If your revolver is a 642, call S&W's 800 number and have them repair it - they'll put standard OEM spings back in it, if needed, and replace the firing pin, if necessary - likely completely free. If it's a K,L, or N-frame, just take the grip off and tighten that strain screw. If it's tight, refer to the J-frame's instructions. It's best to hear 'BOOM' instead of 'click' when one squeezes the trigger during a 'fecal matter impacting the air movement device' event, even if it requires more DA trigger effort.

Also, in Rev101904 of the 'S&W Safety & Instruction Manual - Revolvers', there it is - on page 19 in bold red letters - "WARNING: THE REVOLVER WILL FIRE IF THE TRIGGER IS PULLED!". Duh.

Hey, Nem... what do you teach? I am a retired college instructor from the Alabama Post-Secondary System (75-95).

Jeff,

Just for clarity ... I wasn't very careful with my good-intentioned joke last night.
(Late night reading after a LONNNNNGGGGGG day at work ...)

I agree with fiVe: IMO, you're NOT nuts about your strategy. I'd do the same.

My quip about you being "nuts" was in the spirit of all of us being 642 "nuts" (in a good way). :)

And I agree also about your very creative use of fiVe. Caught that, and meant to complement.

You've come to the right place. ;)

Nem

Jeff - you certainly have come to the right place. If you stay here just a little while, you'll find out we're all a little nutty. We hope you are finding yourself welcome here in the "642 Ward". Stay a while...

"Now, did I fire 4 or did I fire 5? Lucky....unlucky....lucky....unlucky. 4 sparks, or 5 sparks???... Man, these snap caps seem awful heavy.... Is my Mika in my back pocket or between the wall and the mattress?":):eek::confused::neener:
