Ever since I was a young fella in short pants I have always loved to watch the Andy Griffith Show. But one question has always bugged me and I was hoping that my felllow Highroaders might be able to shed some light on it. I was fairlly certain that Don knotts character Deputy Barney Fife carried Smith &Wesson Wesson model 10. Okay here's my question. Can anybody identify the long guns that Andy Taylor kept in the rack at the Mayberry Sherrif's Office.
-Chuck-

While not a gun in the rack at the office, I think Andy
also shot a Remington Model 32 O/U in a skeet shooting
episode.

Thanks Skribs. I was hoping for some lively debate but that website answers all my questions.

All i could recall was that they were indeed all Winchesters.

On the subject of TV guuns tho.....

Did you ever notice that sometimes Sgt. Schultz, on Hogan's Heros, would be shoulderin a .30-40 Krag instead of a 98 ?

Sorry to ruin your debate, 7th. That said, IMFDB is one of my favorite sites.

Rider, it was probably a 158gr LRN. Pretty much standard police issue in those days.

I remember seeing one or two Garands in the rifle rack.

Andy was an infantryman who fought in Normandy and was a hunter/shooter. Some of those shotguns we saw were probably his.

I remember something about the government issuing rifles to banks because of robberies and I want to say it was a Garand and like I said I believe it was in the 30's

the Garand officially replaced the bolt-action M1903 Springfield as the standard service rifle of the United States Armed Forces in 1936

not invented but replaced the springfield

You are a decade off. It was the 1920s and the weapons were mostly WWI vintage US production Enfields. The Enfield also armed most of the the American Expeditionary Force in WWI. Springfield production didn't catch up until the 20s.

Just because it was adopted in 1937, that doesn't mean that they were actually available then. We started WWII with most units still armed with the 1903 Springfield.

The M14 became our standard issue rifle, replacing the the M1 in 1957. However they were never produced in sufficient quantity to completely arm the force. There was a congressional investigation in 1960 or so as to why the troops on the front line, the Berlin Brigade, still had the M1 when the M14 was adopted as standard issue 3 years earlier.

The M16A2 was adopted as the US service rifle in 1985 however the M16 and M16A1 were issued in some units until 2002 or 2003.

Ok, here are some screen shots.

Obviously there is a Winchester in the show that Internet Movie Firearms Database does not list.

I think I also see the Carcano mentioned above as the far right rifle in the first shot below. Would guess that there is an Arisaka in the third frame far right, which is also the 4th gun from the left in the second frame.

Question: Is it now prohibited to post youtube links? I had a posting with the link to this episode, and it disappeared???
