Interesting read - good snapshot for a beginner. you could get the same info from perusing these forums (with a few lively discussions)
tho'

He gives pretty short shrift to the .44 Special. I kept a Taurus 431 with +P Corbon cartridges and other loads for HD for many years. Many good loads exist, though gun stores carry them with decreasing frequency.

He doesn't mention the .44 Magnum at all. Strange.

I also noticed that he doesn't mention the 44 Mag.

I hate to say it, But it looks to me like he really doesn't like a revolver. Why I feel this way is he just really didn't have anything good to say about the ammo that is chambered for a revolver, And failed to mention that you can get a 45 acp revolver, And in turn did not elaborate on them...Just skipped over that all together.

And in my opinion the 38 is one of the best self defense loads you can have. All one has to do is look at the track record and it speaks for it's self. And I am a big fan of the 357. Magnum, Which also has quite a proven track record.

Don't get me wrong I like my semi autos, But something about a good ol revolver that just can't be beat. And if his goal is to help beginners he needs to present a fair and balanced review on both the semi autos and the revolvers. He even went so far as to NOT recommend a 45 colt load, I am assuming he is doing this out of the fact that most guns for this load are single action, But I guess he hasn't tried the Judge yet...Thats a very nice gun for self defense in my opinion and it shoots really nice as well.

I'm asked about beginner's weapons often. I usually have to tell people that the golden rule is what you can comfortably shoot in the platform that fits your hand well. I usually try to let them shoot 9mm, 40, and 45acp and will often let them fire my .357 and .38 but almost all of them have went with an autoloader.

Modern ammunition in any caliber .38 Special and up is adequate for self defense. Pick whatever caliber and platform fits your lifestyle and don't worry about it. Worry about training. Spend the time you are spending looking for a magic bullet that doesn't exist training.
