Bear hunting, what caliber would you suggest?
As far as whitetail hunting i know most hunters use the 270 or the 30/06.

What type of bear are you hunting for?

For the smaller bears - I think 30-06 would be the minimum.

For the larger bears - I would think 300 Winchester Magnum or 338 Winchester Magnum would be the minimum.

Not a bear hunter though. Just what I have gathered thru the years.

judging from the websites you have in your signature I assume you're not talking about the huge ones.

For the black ones I, and all my bear hunting friends in western NC, say the 270 and 30-06 are fine. I'd personally choose the 30-06 out of the two for no particular reason.

As always “The Best†is pretty subjective.

My idea was/is a Remington Mod 7 Mannlicher from the Custom shop in .350 Remington Mag. I topped it with a Swarovski 1.25 X 4 scope in Warne quick release mounts. The scope is sighted in for 225 Nosler Partitions, and the iron sights for 250 grainers.

It’s my combination black bear, and woods elk rifle.

Seriously, I see nothing wrong with using a Mosin Nagant loaded with 180 gr. Ballistic Silvertips for black bear. A friend of mine did just that last year, and bagged a nice 300# WI black bear.

It really depends on how you are hunting them. If you are spot and stalk hunting then all of the suggestions above are great. If you are hunting them over a bait then whatever you like is also fine.

If you are hound hunting I like a real light little lever gun in .30-30 or .44 mag or .357. Or better yet a Ruger Redhwak in .44 mag shooting 240gr soft points. Just a whole lot easier to carry. Black bears are pretty soft critters so use whatever you prefer for deer.

Best Gun for Bears

I would have to say that the best rilfe for hunting bears would be a M1A modified for .375 H & H that WildAlaska of Wild West Guns will build for $10,000 (as advertised on another post).

(i am saving up my money for the prototype!)
