I agree , my 6" 686 is my favorite revolver and I also bought it in the mid 80's . It was my first handgun . Yours really looks nice with those grips .

Have a 4" like yours and a 2 1/2" and they are both good shooters!;)
 
I admit I'm biased (since I've got 3 of them :cool:), but the 4" 686 is a sweet-shooting gun.

FYI those are finger groove Combat Grips.... Target grips would be smooth versions of the Coke Bottle shaped Service Stocks.

By the title, I figure this isn't a 686 only thread. I have a couple of 686's and believe my 8 3/8" may be the most accurate revolver I own.... However, I think my best based on hot load round count is a Colt King Cobra I bought new in 1990. I carried around a big glossy picture book from S&W and a big glossy picture book from Colt for 6 months trying to decide between 686 and King Cobra. Colts Ultimate Bright Stainless won out.

Nice looking gun... I have an old 4 inch 686. It's a good compromise between portability and shoot-ability. Although, for purely a shooting/range and hunting 357 I prefer the 6 inch. The 4 inch 686's though seem to just look "right" to me, sort of an aggressive, strickly business-like look. It's probably just me...

I love mine... 686+ 4" 7 shots, purchased in 1997... absolutely great all around revolver. It is on my never sell list.

Having said that, my favorite revolver is actually a Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley Lipsey's Special Edition in 44 Magnum 3 3/4" Barrel... the S&W 686 and 696 no dash are close seconds...The Ruger and 686 are very versatile field guns. The 696 is just damn fun to shoot and rare...
 
That's a nice one. I foolishly sold 4" 686 No Dash. (Sigh) Didn't have the nice combat grips though.
 
So post our best revolvers? Or is this more a statement rather than a topic. Beautiful gun btw. I only got rid of mine because I prefer the half lug. Other than that, my 686's were excellent.

I agree that my 4" S&W 686 is my best revolver to shoot.

Bit if I'm stopped at a traffic light, at night, in a bad part of town -- my S&W 642 will become the best revolver I ever owned !!! :neener:
 
Around the time the 586 and 686 came out, I had a pair of Pythons. I thought the L-frames were OK, but admit I kind of looked down on them a little. Then I shot one, a friends', which admittedly had had a trigger job done. My estimation of them went up a lot.
 
My uncle was a deputy sheriff back when revolvers were still king. He carried a 4 inch no dash 686 with 38 special wad cutters. Many years ago when he took another job as a prison guard at Ft. Leavenworth he ended up selling my dad the 686 along with his duty belt/holster, which my dad still has.

I keep trying to talk my dad into selling it to me but he likes it too much, though he rarely shoots it. I personally own a 686-5 in 2.5 inch with a 7 shot cylinder. They sure are sweet shooting revolvers.
 
I'm a huge fan of my GP100. I would have bought whichever of the GP or the 686 I came across first at a decent price. Admitting the Smith has a smoother trigger, I shoot my GP better. But there are some masterpieces on here.
