This is one to keep an eye on and push for passage. We know how the screamers and cryers are going to say, "The streets will be flooding with blood."
Didn't happen in VT or AK.
I would bet the crime rate would drop, too.

Concealed guns
http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36~64~1931457,00.html

People could carry concealed guns without permits under a bill introduced Monday. Rep. Greg Brophy, R-Wray, proposed "The Colorado Freedom to Carry Act," meaning any law-abiding citizen who has the legal right to possess handguns under federal and state law could carry concealed handguns "without going through the burdensome and expensive process of acquiring a permit." House Bill 1281 comes less than a year after Colorado enacted two new gun laws. One requires law enforcement to issue concealed carry permits to people who meet certain qualifications. The other pre-empts local gun ordinances and is being challenged in Denver District Court. Brophy said he modeled his bill on Vermont and Alaska laws, which allow residents to carry concealed guns without obtaining a permit.

I wrote my rep, who's normally a solid pro-gun type and got this back:
----------------
Bill, Be careful what you ask for. I think the passage of this bill will
only excite the anti-gun people who will then go to the ballot with an
imitative banning all forms of concealed carry. Just look at what they
accomplished with Amendment 22, remember they have the numbers. It will only take a bill like this to really get them energized. Joe Stengel HD 38

He may be right, but the gun issue has been bad news for Dems up to this point. I wonder if handing them a third rail like this in an election year wouldn't be a bad idea.

"Gun control: It's not about guns."

I wrote my rep and I'll have my wife do the same. I don't know anything about our rep's voting record but she's a Dem so, I doubt we can expect much from her. At least we can all make our voices heard.

In addition to writing your reps, try to get all your friends to write as well.

It's super unethical but I wonder if anyone has ever written to reps using other peoples names and addresses. Sheesh, the crazy ideas I come up with.... No unethical activities for me. I'm in law school.

Try turning Colorado into the Wild West. Of course that's what one expects from the Denver Post. Tell the truth,I just didn't have time to fisk it on my blog as I usually would. Perhaps in a bit. Although I did invite any readers to send me a fisk & if it's suitable I'll post it.

But what's more important than defending against these baseless attacks by the anti's is motivating the politicains & orgs who claim they are pro-gun. The biggest opposition this bill will have is not from Democrats & the Tom Mauser types, but the state NRA affiliate & republicans who claim they're pro gun.

mr_dove,
If your rep is a woman whose name starts with a "S" & ends with an "Z" then odds are it'll have no effect. If your rep is Veiga, again odds are she won't take your position seriously. If it makes you feel any better mine is Frangas & again, no real hope that he'd listen to reason if it conflicts with his party's platform.

Bottom line is unless they get a vast influx of mail from potential supporters they really don't give a damn - even if you make valid points.

But ya gotta try anyway, if nothing else just to say you did.

I wrote a little somethin' somethin' about the proposed no permit required law & you can find it here

Short version is its coming to a comittee vote tuesday, So contact Rep Sinclair (who heads the comittee) & politely tell him to support the Colorado Freedom to Carry Act.

Here's his contact info

"Call Rep. Sinclair toll-free at 800-811-7647 (or
directly at 303-866-2965) and POLITELY urge him to live up to his
pledge
and support House Bill 1281. You can only call the toll-free number
during work hours (a live operator transfers you to Sinclair's office),
but you can call the direct line and leave a voice mail at any time.
You can also e-mail Rep. Sinclair at: [email protected] "

Call. There's some speculation that e-mail won't reach him in time (i.e. he's probably so swamped with e-mail that he won't wade through it till things slow down for him.)

But call. & call any & every firearm related orgs in Colorado & explain to them that unless they get off their tail & support this bill you'll withdraw all support from them. & mean it. Same applies to politicians - especially republicans.

It'll be an uphill fight, but we can either start making our way back up the hill or keep sliding to the bottom.

Dead in comittee. A committee made up of 7 Repubs & 4 dems who earlier passed a bill about naming our state rock has killed this one about an individual Right.

This is an election year. Are any of the committee members run for office this year??
Vote against all you can. If they have nobody running against them, run against them yourself.
