As far as assault weapons to a civilian, it's alright if you get the mag capacity down to 5 rounds

And they wonder why people don't think the NRA does anything.

And wonder why gun owners don't like the NRA.

They are working against us saying <stuff> like that.

I emailed the NRA expressing my objection to a director espousing this sort of view to the public.

***! Anyone have contact info for people at the NRA? Not a basic "comments" address, but a real person, preferably with some influence?

Ranger Jackson is not on the NRA board of Directors any longer, and I don't believe he has been for 3 years (although I heard he had been re-elected nothing shows on the NRA website). While I respect him for having BTDT, I also respectfully disagree with him as well.

Edited to add, that I don't think suggesting a "coup de grace" is appropriately highroad, nor a smart thing to do on a public forum.

Dangit, I already emailed the NRA. Now I look like an idiot.

The guy was on the board from 2001-2004. This interview appears to be from 2003.

I don't understand why the NRA doesn't just fight for our right to own any firearm, assuming that they know and realize they will not be able to defend our rights as easily if they give gun control supporters any ground.

NRA Board member against assault weapons

Here we go again. cept this one is an NRA board member.:banghead:
I found this somewhere else too. As posted on BRC by Victor N TN

Enemy within – NRA Board member

The link above is for an interview with NRA Board member Joaquin Jackson. In it, he states his distaste for private citizens to own so-called “assault weapons.” This is inexcusable coming from a NRA Board member. The offending comment is in the video which is at the bottom of the page.

The link is invalid.

This one works...
http://www.klru.org/texasmonthlytalks/archives/jackson/jackson.asp

He isn't completely against assault weapons so long as they don't have more than a 5 round capacity. He doesn't think anyone outside of law enforcement and the military needs more than that and he doesn't think hunters should need more than one round, if they are a good shot.

Strangely, he claims the 2nd needs to be protected because he feels that without it, the others would fall in a domino effect. So, apparently he thinks that we can preserve the 2nd and other amendments with guns that hold no more than 5 rounds.

That is just plain crazy talk.

Looks like our original information that this fellow is no longer on the NRA board is wrong and that he still serves.

Let me remind everyone to keep it on The High Road.

I was told by a guy on Glock Talk that he's active through 2010....

STATEMENT OF JOAQUIN JACKSON

Recently, some misunderstandings have arisen about a news interview in which I participated a few years ago. After recently watching a tape of that interview, I understand the sincere concerns of many people, including dear friends of mine. And I am pleased and eager to clear up any confusion about my long held belief in the sanctity of the Second Amendment.

In the interview, when asked about my views of “assault weapons,” I was talking about true assault weapons – fully automatic firearms. I was not speaking, in any way, about semiautomatic rifles. While the media may not understand this critical distinction, I take it very seriously. But, as a result, I understand how some people may mistakenly take my comments to mean that I support a ban on civilian ownership of semiautomatic firearms. Nothing could be further from the truth. And, unfortunately, the interview was cut short before I could fully explain my thoughts and beliefs.

In fact, I am a proud owner of such rifles, as are millions of law-abiding Americans. And many Americans also enjoy owning fully automatic firearms, after being cleared by a background check and meeting the rigorous regulations to own such firearms. And these millions of lawful gun owners have every right – and a Second Amendment right – to own them.

As a hunter, I take great pride in my marksmanship. Every hunter should practice to be skilled to take prey with a single shot, if possible. That represents ethical, humane, skilled hunting. In the interview several years ago, I spoke about this aspect of hunting and my belief that no hunter should take the field and rely upon high capacity magazines to take their prey.

But that comment should never be mistaken as support for the outright banning of any ammunition magazines. In fact, such bans have been pursued over the years by state legislatures and the United States Congress and these magazine bans have always proven to be abject failures.

Let me be very clear. As a retired Texas Ranger, during 36 years of law enforcement service, I was sworn to uphold the United States Constitution. As a longtime hunter and shooter, an NRA Board Member, and as an American – I believe the Second Amendment is a sacred right of all law-abiding Americans and, as I stated in the interview in question, I believe it is the Second Amendment that ensures all of our other rights handed down by our Founding Fathers.

I have actively opposed gun bans and ammunition and magazine bans in the past, and I will continue to actively oppose such anti-gun schemes in the future.

I appreciate my friends who have brought this misunderstanding to light, for it has provided me an opportunity to alleviate any doubts about my strong support for the NRA and our Second Amendment freedom.

What do you think? Wouldn't be the first time the media either twisted something to suit an anti-gun agenda, or just couldn't be bothered to get the FACTS right...

"I was talking about true assault weapons – fully automatic firearms."
So, he meant limiting full-auto weapons to 5 rounds? ***? Sounds like he's BSing to cover his arse.

That IS a bit odd, I admit.

I dunno though, I'd be happy if I could go and buy a full-auto that only came with a 5-round mag IF I could buy it the same as any OTHER gun. And get "aftermarket" full-cap mags too! :D

I believe him. Back in the good old days what we call "the media" were mainly reporters who actually said and wrote straight fact pieces about the news. They wrote things like this:

Three cars collided in a fog on the New York State Thruway near Albany around 10:30 PM last night. One driver was found dead by the first police to arrive. The other drivers were taken to the Thomas E. Dewey Hospital where they remain in critical condition.

Today there are journalists whose work really is editorials and opinion pieces parading as news. That same automobile pileup would now be something like this:

The Republican controlled death trap claimed several more victims last night. Harold Farkis died when two high powered cars similar to those once owned by members of the Bush family plowed into his in what appeared to be an act of vengeance. Both drivers of those murderous vehicles were unharmed. A deadly .22 shell casing, of the kind used by Mafia assassins, was found near the scene and was thought to have been dislodged from one of the assault vehicles. Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City issued a statement deploring the smuggling of illegal ammunition. "How many more deaths will the NRA have on its conscience before the madness ends?"

My examples obviously are concocted to suit the nature of this forum but the essential point is that in the past decades the press has become a Constitutionally protected propaganda industry. I give its output the same credence I give to advertisements of products that claim to cure baldness.

While I'm irritating everyone I'll say that I see no useful purpose in dredging up slanted old media stories that create distrust towards the major organization on which we must rely to defend us. I'd leave the dissemination of messages entitled "The enemy within ..." to the Brady Campaign and its sympathizers. Since that's "just my opinion" it would be un-American for anyone to criticize it. ;)

It's not just a media story, those words came out of his own mouth and were recorded on film.

It sounds to me like he is back pedaling from his statements and may not make such comments again, but, his new comments aren't acceptable either, as there shouldn't be any restrictions on magazines or guns themselves, fully automatic or semi-automatic. Regardless, I doubt we'll need to "Zumbo" him, but a close eye will need to be kept on his future comments on the subject. And if I were a member of the NRA who could vote on directors, I don't think I'd vote for him. And I disagree that the NRA is who we must depend on for protecting our rights, there are less compromising groups out there.

Sounds like a really nice bit of CYA to me.

I think this guy should resign and as an active NRA member (more than 5 years as someone pointed out earlier) I will make my comments known to the powers that be in our pre-eminent RKBAorganization. :barf::barf::barf::barf::barf::barf::barf:

:banghead::cuss::fire::cuss::banghead:

When will these idiots learn that comments such as these will be taken out of context and will be used against the cause? The 2A isn't about hunting or "some" firearms, it is about the right given by our creator to pursue life linerty and happiness...

Okay, L&P is closed. I meant to close this when I posted yesterday, but hit the wrong button.

Go to Activism discussion, use that to correlate what the actual facts are and figure out if this guy is in fact on the BOD. Come up with a plan. And if I see any whining, crying, or otherwise useless bloviating posts, I'll kill it again. Stick with facts, and useful action.

Come up with a plan of attack, and then post it to Activism. Take action.
