Got S&W 24 SR's #4 mk 1 "scout" back from the gunsmith and wow what a great little shooter!

The project started two years (or was it 4?) ago with an auctionarms purchase of an old refield IER scope base, followed by a matching scope and rings. This ended up in the back of the gun closet for a good amount of time.
About 1 1/2 yrs ago S&W 24 SR got a #4 sporter from a family friend. about 6 months after that we found a great looking sporter stock on another SMLE sporter. after desiding not to keep the gun we switched out the 5 round mag and the nice stock for some not so great looking ones and sold it at a gun show.

Long story short we now have a 20" bbl savage made #4 mk 1 enfield with a golden state arms 5 round mag, bishop stock, 1" sling swivels, and a redfield "scout" scope. At 50 yards I'm getting .5 inch groups with south african ball ammo! 123 grain handloads only gave me 1.5 inch groups at 50 yards.

If I can find out how to post a pick I will

First, host it on a website(I recommend photobucket.com or imageshack.com) and then post the image tags here.(Ex: [*IMG]http://URL.com[/IMG*] )
Just be sure to remove the asterisks.

and a few more

Very nice.

One question though... what about a back-up rear aperture sight? From the looks of the rear view, it wouldn't be a big deal to install one... issue micrometer or Williams FP/TK (base on left side; sight in kit) either one.

the wood is bishop I think. It came of another sporter.

The redfield scope base includes a back-up rear sight at the forward portion so you can dismount the scope by loosening the allen screw and sliding it off.
Revesable for either a U notch or a square notch.

Sweet!

Bubba had already despoiled the poor thing so nice save. Everyone should try to save a bubba.

Looks good. I've got no problem with a conversion of that type.

Is the 5 round magazine due to hunting restrictions in your state?

I think the grand total is around $350. The 5 round mag helps out because the balance point is right at the magazine and the DNR won't ask any questions.

Bubba II

This one has the 5 round mag. I have a box of these new in the wrapper 5's and the do improve a carry at the balance. The rifle started as a nice 1944 BSA #4T. I cut the barrel down 4" with a hack saw and stuffed it into a fake #5 stock. I then traded the 3.5X scope for a Tasco 3X9.:neener:

MJ,
What length was your barrel cut to and do you know how much the whole rig weighs now? I have an Enfield that needs to be rebarreled and I am thinking of having it cut back to 20 inches and putting the whole thing in some type of a wood sporter stock. I want to stick with iron sights but I may mount a low power scope using an XS Sights scout mount. I'm a lefty so that makes it easy to work the bolt.

I have a Long Branch #4 Mk. 1* that would make an interesting rifle, but the barrel is a goner and have not been able to locate a good new one at any sort of price that makes sense.

If anyone is sitting on a good usable one and a reasonable price I might be interested. I hate to see the rifle sit as the rest of it has possibilities.

"...1944 BSA #4T..." You didn't really start with a full military configuration No. 4 sniper did you? If so, you made a $150 rifle out of a $2,000ish rifle.
How's the headspace on all these gems?

And that's the danger of Bubba-ing a rifle before you know what you've got.

MJ, I seriously hope you were just trying to yank our chains. Please tell me that the rifle was, in fact, just an ordinary No.4...

MJ and I post on a couple of other boards... he's always posting pictures of some really nice old sniper rifles. I seriously doubt, knowing what he does about these rifles, that he'd do something like that. I wouldn't put it past him to rescue something from Bubba though.
