At least, the first thing.....I.....did. Back in the days when you could buy a pistol at 18 and take it to school in your car and go shootin after school.

Wa'al, ah gots me a nice FIRST MODEL WW1 1911. Set me back 35 bucks. But it was all wore on da corners an stuff. WHO WANTS A GUN LIKE THAT?

So......had it reblued. SHINY! Oh boy! Now the corners was roundy instead of just unblued so it was a lot better for quick draw.

Then.....the grips. Anyone know how many HOURS it takes to sand off those goofy DIAMONDS on the grip panels? LOTS! But then, a nice coat of SPRAY VARNISH!!! And the gun was ......almost ......complete.

It only needed ....one....more.....thing.....!!! STIPPLING!

So it got ...stippled! Didn't know how to strip it other than a field strip so hadda leave the grip safety in while ....STIPPLING. Nice center punch an a vise an away I went. Didn't miss the frame TOO many times and whang the stipple into and across the flats of the edge.

But....THEN.....it was PURDY!

So now you know how to fancy up a 1911.

:uhoh:  :( :D

That sounds just like what my first 1911 looked like when I got it. After learning more about 1911s, the more I looked at that thing, the sicker it made me, so I had to sell it. That stippling with a punch was the worst part. :barf:

Look out your front window, there's a mob coming ... Run now while you still have a chance ... :neener:

Boo hoo hoo.......I was NOT kidding this time. This was back in the days when NO ONE wanted a GI .45.....too crude....can't hit anything....too many of em......12 in every pawn shop.......1911 or 1911A1, who cares?...... ammo expensive...... kicks like a MULE....... 25-35 bucks....
Along with $40 Lugers, $19 Mannlicher pistols, $25 P-38's, $86 NEW K-22's, $97 Winchester M76 (I think)..., $125 SAA's, $45 M1 carbines, $60 Garands, $95 Smith M27's.......

need I go on?

A .45 was a clunker. But us kids read how they could be "improved" which they could, but on a kid's budget it amounted to bluing and stippling.

Ahhhh me.

:(

.I was NOT kidding this time.

Open shirt, kneel on matt. Bow head submissively, insert sharp knife on left side of belly and slice across and up....

Thats the only way to make up for the shame of what you did

:) :neener:

T'was true, thy song of sacrilege???
Infidel! Heathen! Maladigitator!

Repent. Reform. Redeem.
Goest thou hence, sinner, and seekst out an other weapon of its breed, the 'US Army Model of 1911', unstained and chaste. Sendest thou this pure instrument of doom to thy saintly confessor (that'd be me, horge) as penance for thy sins.

And sinnest thou nevermore!

:)

There was a time when surplus 1911's and 1911-A1's were considered little more than a basis for a custom built gun. Wouldn't dream of doing that today!

I think I saw that gun at the gunshow last weekj

Dealer said it was a custom job and wanted $1500.00 for it!!

Shoot, I forgot to mention...

I do very reasonable work on 1911's now. Accurizing via crimping bushings, Bondo lug buildup, torch feed ramp cutting, Dremel mag well enlargement, link staking with nails, and assorted custom stuff.

My engraving is a unique style as I believe I am the only smith doing it with a serrated Ginsu knife.

Send for quotes.

You know what you must do ...

BryanP.....I did that. Seriously. I was redoing a knife and puttin an edge on the top part of the clip part and after I was satisfied that it was as sharp as I could get it, I oiled the blade.

HOWEVER, when I placed the oil can back up on the shelf and brought my hand back down, I managed to pull it straight on to the blade.

Nice LONGITUDINAL ......d e e p.......cut. Wife asked if I wanted stitches an I told her I warn't goin to no hospital with a LONGITUDINAL cut. Forms, probly mental health. (cudn't pass that anyway)

So I used butterfly closures and got a good result. But that scar always makes doctors ASK how I did it.

Tell them your first 1911 story and they'll understand
