The gun that got away

Gun sold: A very accurate Ruger Blackhawk 45 Colt with Target Grips and 7.5" barrel. I traded for a Ruger Security Six 375 with factory target grips and a 6" barrel.

Gun Not purchased: A Mannlicher Schoenauer 30-06 with double set triggers for about $350. At, of all places, Cabela's in Sidney.

4 inch stainless King Cobra for $400 ish in a consignment case. STUPID. I waited til payday instead of putting some money down.. and I was already doing business with the shop.

Early 6" python, M12 25" cylinder bore, browning mountain rifle 50, S&W K32, K22, 1955 Target. There are more but I am getting depressed. I no longer sell anything.

Years ago . . . I was still a kid in high school. We traded a Colt Diamondback .22 with a 2.5" barrel for a M70 .30/06. :banghead:

Still, I've done a lot of hunting (including 3 African safaris) with the rifle, so it's hard to feel TOO bad . . .

Or at least, I keep telling myself that.

My first custom built 1911...Colt slide on an Essex frame. Pachmayr and Ed Brown parts. Sold it 25 years ago and would love to get it back.

A mint condition blued S&W Model 58 .41 Magnum at McBride's Pawn Shop in Denton, Texas priced at $599. Saw it, slept on it, went there the next day and it was gone.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

The Royal Carry...

Mine seemed to have a much brighter finish than the copy pictured here. It was a fantastic pistol

I had the opportunity to buy a very nice Remington Rand about 10 years ago for a few hundred dollars, if only I had known then what I know now......

Gun that got away cause of stupid, idiotic grandson:

This is a heads up for all of us in the over 55 league [ I am past 60 ] becareful who you leave your guns toooooooooooo:

I was at a gun show in Western Nebraska -I am sorry but I can not remember the name of the town- I had 3 tables next to a gun-show-gun-buddy. I'd help him watch his stuff and he help me...etc. Plus I have know him for 20+ years. His first name is Jack....

Early on Saturday the 1st day of a 2-day gun show this college age 'boy' brought in, in a army pack ........

I was watching my stuff and rearranging a few of my knives when I noticed out the corner of my eye that Jack was moving towards me and his eyes were as big a golf balls....

" Hey Mike can you loan me 900. The Kids wants 900 cash for his Army 45 acp"

I told Jack: "Jack I don't have that much gelt on me right now...it's just too early in the show...ask the kid if he'll take your check...there are many in here who will vouch for you"

Jack went back to the 'KID' and after a few minutes I saw Jack write out the check.

After handing over the check and Jack getting the Colt, he glanced over at me with a HUGE SMILE....!

After 10 minutes had gone by and the kid left the show, Jack comes over and tells me this:

""THAT college kid brought in his grandpa's WW-2, Colt 45 Acp in it's army holster and other stuff that his granddad got with the gun for actions in Battle of the Bulge. THAT dummy wants to buy a go-kart! His granddad left it to him in his willl and he died a couple of months back and the kid does not care about the Colt. I told that kid the Colt was worth more but he just wanted enough to buy a go-kart!!!!"""

"""Mike, that Colt was all original, all the correct marking and the feed ramp was un-marked and the circular machining on the feed ramp was visible to the naked eye....I mean the Colt was stunning.""

I found Jack a Colt collector via the 'Net' in Texas and sent him detailed pictures of all the parts of the Colt. I got an emial w/in 1-hour of sending the photo's:

'Name your price"

I immediately called Jack, then forwared the email. Jack named his price and within 2days of the information exchange the Texan had overnighted payment.

A dham dumb grand kid sold off a family treasure, for a go-kart.

So, if your kids or grandkids are so absolutley STOOOOPID-CLUELESS about you guns SELL THEM YOUR SELF and go fishing....

The only one I really feel got away was a Used Ruger Blackhawk in 357 Maximum 30 years ago. Wife and I were on our honeymoon, newly married, NO MONEY. Stopped at a small general store I knew of on the way home and there it was. It looked all but brand new and was a deal at the time. After much soul searching we left without it, when we got to the car my new wife said if you want it, go get it. Being newly married with out much money at the time I said "thanks but no". Guess it was the thought that counted :banghead:

I read threads like this pretty regularly. Some great stories...some happy endings, some regrets.

I have probably sold 3 or 4x the number of guns that I currently own. Do I miss a few? Sure. Do I lay awake at night, or spend my days kicking myself in the arse about it? No.

There are those in the "never sell anything" camp. If I were one of those, I'd probably still have the same six guns I had 30 years ago.

We only have limited time on this planet, and (most of us) only have limited resources.

There are many material things I would like to own, and I cannot afford to own them all...not at once, anyway. I call myself a serial owner.

So I have made a compromise--when there is something I want, I decide what I want to sell in order to have it. To be honest, the situation is not generally that dire--I can afford to buy it first, and then sell something to put the world back in balance.

This makes me think a bit, and consider how badly I want it. Also prevents me from spending every dime I have filling my space with things that I will never use.

Many years ago, a good and wise friend told me that the secret to happiness in life is not in having what you want, but in wanting what you have. He is able to make it work, and has done it for years. Me, not so much.

He still has the first gun he ever bought in 1978/79? I think that in the last 35 years he has bought/sold/traded fewer than a dozen guns. I've done that in a good year. He has had the same motorcycle since 2003, and I think five in his lifetime. I have four currently (although three are project bikes) :) and my lifetime count is approaching 80.

I have no regrets. I have gotten to experience a great depth and breadth of experiences in many facets of life.

Buy at the right price (generally, used) and you will seldom lose money. Figure out what works for you, and sleep well at night.

They're just things. Some of them are prettier than others, and some of them have more sentimental value than others, but they're just things.

Bingo. IMHO.

A friend walked in at work. He wanted to sell his Walther .380 (I think a PPK) My employer was waffleing back and forth about buying and pretty much had talked himself out of buying. So I (too soon) offered to "buy it if he doesn't". Well, I think that settled it, because two minutes later he bought the gun.

Then there was the Colt Python at the LGS. Price was great but I had two kids and there was no extra cash. So...away it went.

The third was the Marlin 39 that was stolen from my dad. It would have come to me in a few years but it is now in parts unknown.

For me, those are the ones that got away.

Mark

At that time money was not an issue, getting it back was a prime directive and nothing was going to prevent 'getting it back'....

I had a 1st edition of Winchester lever action, in the 375 caliber; I paid
$350. It was worth $500-$700 but I did not care...period!!!!!

I offered it in a straight trade.

He said Yes....
Best transaction is when both parties come away happy. Great story by the way. And you're right about leaving your guns to the right people. Mine will likely be sold after I die, as I have no kids, but I keep a log showing current values because I just don't want anybody taking advantage of the wife, should I die before her. If she wants to give them away, fine, I just want her to have that choice, and the info at her disposal. I've also thought of leaving them to the NRA, should she go first.
