So far back in the WV hills that they have to pipe
a guy brought a nagant to work that he was trying to sell. it had a sporterized stalk and the front sight hood was removed. the trigger spring/sear was broken. and saying the gun was in bad shape would be a compliment.

30 buckaroos was the asking price. and no one wanted it.

he was going to chop it up with the chop saw to see if it would cut it!

well being the compasionate person I am, I bought it for 10 bucks. my fake 91/30 sniper can use a friend;) . or commorade as it were.

but something is different about this rifle, it has the octagonal reciver. but the markings on the breech are in english. they are hard to read but I can make out

NEW ENGLAND
WESTI... OUSE

it has 3 little eagle head looking things on the breech two with x5 and one with x4 below it.

it has a casting mark like an eagle or a pheonix or some other type of flaming bird. where the star on a russian would.

the bolt is russian, it has the stars on each individual piece. but the bolt serial number, magazine floor plate and barrel serial numbers dont match.

Ill try to get some pics up but does anyone have any ideas where this thing came from and would anyone have a trigger spring/sear for sale?

thanks

Ya got an Imperial Mosin Nagant made by Westinghouse (WW1) track down the guy that bubbaed it and beat him until he vows to give away all his hand tools...

These are collectables unlike the Soviet ones everywhere

Check over on The Russian Mosin-Nagant Forum http://www.russian-mosin-nagant.com/phpBB2/index.php The people over there are very knowledgable about M-N's although they hat people who chop up these rifles like the guy did to yours.

A Westinghouse Mosin is a rare find. You might be able to get some parts from the members or at least find out where you can get them.

There is some good information and pictures here:

Click on the link called "M-N rifle Guide to Proof and Markings" There is a pic of a hex receiver with Westinghouse markings in Row 3 Column C.

www.tngunparts.com shows the trigger spring in stock. As to the sear... if I'm not mistaken, the sear is actually part of the trigger on mosins. They've got those too. And the M1891s actually didn't have a front sight hood, so no worries there. :)

Keeperofthehills - you are to be commended for your compassion and inclination towards protecting our firearms heritage. Give her the restoration she deserves.

A Westinghouse Mosin is a rare find.

Dern i wish i'd known that 6 years ago, when a dealer near me had 6 of them... plus a similar number of Remington M-Ns. all of them were priced below $100 a piece and he couldn't move em for love nor money. i heavily THOUGHT about taking one home as a first Surplus rifle, but they looked like total CRAP compared to most other WW1 and WW2 rifles i could find then, and i knew nothing of what Mosins at the time.

If that NE Westinghouse has eagles on it, it is one of those bought by the US in 1917-1918 to use as training rifles. American makers were stuck with a whole lot of those rifles when Russia pulled out of the war and abrogated the contracts. The US was short of rifles so the army not only got some needed rifles but rescued American companies from a big loss as well (and Cheney was NOT involved, no matter what Kerry says).

No M-N rifles were ever sent overseas with US troops. American troops sent into Russia in 1919 were armed with the M-N after landing, but those rifles were procured in Russia, not shipped from the US.

Note that some of those M-N rifles were reworked for .30-'06 by setting the barrels back and rechambering, or just rechambering. Many authorities consider either conversion as borderline dangerous, but I have never heard of any actually blowing up, although the rechambering without barrel setback can result in bulged cases.

keeper,

email me off line (or PM). It is just possible that I can get hold of a stock and other parts you need to put it back into shape. If you have a C&R I can send a complete gun, minus the extractor to you. Without the C&R I can send everything but the receiver/barrel.
