denied entrance to "tax" hearing

due to the mob of around 1000 (I'm not kidding) realtors who descended on the Ways & Means Committee hearings today to oppose a tax on "services" (real estate, plumbing, and dry cleaning, among others).

Anybody who made it inside, could you fill us in? I saw John Josselyn and Sandy Abrams standing around, but they had already signed up to testify. I wasn't even allowed to go in the hearing room to hear testimony on HB441 since all the seats were taken.

KILLED!

Voting For SB 43

Thanks to all of you who helped to make this victory possible by calling and writing the committee members. Special thanks go to the 210 gunnies who took a day off work to attend the hearing and provide testimony.

Well Done!

Its not over folks!

Its not over folks!

This is a big step but keep in mind that there are enough sponsors of this bill to force it to the floor and circumvent the committee.....

Very dangerous but it is still POSSIBLE.

If that does happen we need to mobilize a phone call campaign in a heartbeat and get on ALL of the Senators to vote this down.

In addition we also have HB 441/Assault Weapons Tax which was heard yesterday.. we only had 5 people show up in opposition and it was a hostile group of Delegates.

We need everyone to call/write/e-mail the delegates and urge an unfavorable report. This bill has the potential to be lit up on the floor into a much more damaging bill than a simple tax.

Go here for e-mail and phone contact info for the Delegates on the House Ways and Means Committee.

So much for Raskin seeing the light after he told us that we wouldn't vote for the bill

Gladden is acting on her wish....to disarm the lawful citizens of MD while simultaneously sponsoring a bill to allow convicted felons access to those very same firearms. :banghead:

any victory is a good one

It isn't over till the gavel raps in April, but this is a good sign.

It is depressing, though, to see five people still vote for the ban even after hearing why it is a bad idea.

I think God could have come down on a cloud and appeared in the hearing room and testified against it and Frosh, Gladden, Muse and Forehand would still have voted for it. Logic and facts never seem to work with those types.

Sen Jacobs is Pro Rights....she's on our side and is also the sponsor/co-sponsor of a bunch of good bills.

Try to keep the insults, invective, snide remarks and threats out of your letters. Gloating will only make people like frosh, et,al. more determined to vote against us in the future. Plus swing voters could turn against us as well.Don't get down in the gutter with them. Many of these senators come from districts that are heavily waited with liberal Democrats who don't care about the 2nd Amendment.

Trust me, I know to keep my sailor talk out of the picture. I wish I didn't have to, as profanity is one area in life where I truly shine - but I know how those folks look at us already without it.

Celebration

Anyone interested in grabbing a beer or three in Annapolis this Fri to celebrate SB 43?

Assault weapons ban likely dead for session
Committee ties; full Senate vote not expected
By Andrew A. Green

Originally published March 16, 2007

A Senate committee yesterday rejected a ban on assault weapons, effectively ending the proposal's chances for this General Assembly session.

The Judicial Proceedings Committee deadlocked 5-5 over the ban, which means the bill will likely not get a full vote on the Senate floor. With no corresponding legislation in the House of Delegates, that means the issue is almost certainly dead for the year.
Two Baltimore County Democrats - Sens. Norman K. Stone and James Brochin - joined three Republicans on the committee to kill the bill.

"The only people we target in this bill are law-abiding citizens who use these guns for target shooting or competitions," Brochin said. "I wish gun control worked, but it doesn't make any sense."

The bill, which was endorsed by Gov. Martin O'Malley, would have banned the importation, sale or possession of 45 types of semi-automatic handguns and long guns in Maryland.

The federal government's assault weapons ban ended in 2004, but most of the guns covered by that legislation still face stiffer regulations than other firearms under Maryland law.

Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler and the Maryland State Police testified in support of the bill, but the state Fraternal Order of Police opposed it, saying the law would be difficult to enforce.

The push to enact stricter gun laws in Maryland got stronger after the Washington-area sniper shootings of 2002, but efforts failed under former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., who opposed an assault weapons ban.

Supporters had hoped that O'Malley's backing would make the difference, but the result this year was the same.

O'Malley spokesman Rick Abbruzzese said the governor is disappointed, but he said he could not say whether the governor will pursue the issue in the future.

Related Matter

Does anyone happen to know whether a yearly surcharge on the possession of AW was discussed during the hearings?

I wish we could call these firearms Black Guns, or something else because none of us intends to use these boom boom sticks to ,ASSAULT, anyone.

Proof

Does anyone think it might be a good idea to post a public invitation to our anti-gun opponents to come to a shooting range for some personal AW shooting experience. I believe it would clear up some their ignorance. Should they refuse it would be a public admission that they (ant-gunners) are afraid to confront the truth. Who knows they might even have fun.

Well, we can call them sport utility rifles...

Or Evul Black Rifles, to mock people's fear.

Or Black Guns, which will cause them to back away thinking it's a race card.

I often offer to take antis shooting, but it rarely works.

"No, because guns just make me sad."

"No, I don't need to try crack to know it's bad.":fire:

"No, I don't want to risk my life around a bunch of nutjobs.":cuss:

They're largely gutless paranoids, and calm logic only works SOMETIMES.

One of the list of words that just sets a subset of the population off.

Gun, nuclear, global warming, laser, evolution, etc.

Specs, we're actually working on the issue of inviting a few select reps to a local range to show them how these firearms are being used for competition etc by law abiding citizens and hoping to get them interested enough to try for themselves after a little safety chat etc....

We're making/have made the invite to a few select individuals that we believe we can make some headway with.....Frosh and a few others are beyond the ability to discuss with an open mind as much of his political career is based on an Anti Rights Platform but some of the others that were sold a bad bill of goods on this bill may be able to look at this objectively.

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, and I'm as happy as anyone about this vote, but we're not out of the water by any stretch. Given the relative lack of turnout and open hostility by committee members at the hearing for the AW tax bill, I'm really worried that it'll make it to the floor and turn into an AWB. :uhoh:
