When I think "Handgun" I think either Colt 1911 if semi-auto, if it's a single action revolver, it's a Colt Single Action Army, if it's a DA/SA then it's a S&W model 19-4.
Since the OP started with S&Ws I'll play along and show you my idea of a "classic" Smith and it's not the ones they now sell called classics either.
This is a 5" barreled 357 Magnum that shipped in 1953 with the Manga stocks shown (numbered to the gun). These would later come to be called the pre-M27s. When I think S&W revolver this is the gun that comes to mind, even though it is not my absolute favorite. That is, however; my favorite barrel length for the S&W N-frames.
