The next time you think that the pistol in your waistband is a death ray, read this:

He had to be on decent drugs to get through something like that. $50 says he was on OC-80s beforehand.

Regardless of whether this particular incident is true, there are myriad stories to support the fact that handguns aren't death rays. Chris Bird's Thank God I Had a Gun is full of eye-openers. I'd call it a must-read for members of this board.

So, it's illegal to carry this in Illinois....

....but THIS is OK?....

Yeah BBs are no death ray

:D Not to take anything away from the premise of the first post, as I totally agree...

But for what it's worth, in the interest of full disclosure, I live in the area of where he was held over on his connecting flight, and the news people here were all over the story, and I remember hearing a retraction on the story, indicating he was actually shot w/ BBs, which made sense because he was treated briefly at CMC and released onto another flight, which I thought would be a miracle if they were even poorly placed 3 handgun caliber rounds.

Of course my local media is horrible at coordinating their online stories w/ their live stories, let alone archiving anything properly, but a quick google news search on the guys name turns up stories like this one from FL:

http://www.sptimes.com/2007/10/24/Northpinellas/Plane_story_falls_apa.shtml
A Clearwater man who made news over the weekend for telling authorities he took a plane trip after being shot was actually hit by BBs, not bullets, authorities said Tuesday.

What's more, William J. Notaro's injuries appear to have been self-inflicted, not the result of a domestic spat, Pinellas County sheriff's officials said.

And, the Sheriff's Office added, Notaro was likely intoxicated at the time he was wounded.

On Saturday, Notaro, 37, boarded a US Airways flight from Tampa to Charlotte, N.C., on his way to Albany, N.Y.

During a layover in Charlotte he asked for some Band-Aids to treat his wounds, which bled through his shirt. He said an ex-girlfriend wielding a .22-caliber pistol shot him.

Airline officials sent Notaro to the hospital. He was treated and sent on his way.

Detectives in Pinellas County and Albany interviewed Notaro and received inconsistent accounts of what happened.

He told authorities in Albany he was shot by a friend; he told Pinellas deputies he shot himself with a BB gun.

Authorities said they determined the shooting took place at a friend's unit in the Windemere Apartments on Main Street in Dunedin.

Because Notaro changed his story so many times, the Sheriff's Office said it will refer the case to the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney's Office to consider whether to charge him with filing a false police report.

I'll venture dollars to tacos it wasn't a 10MM!

You miss the point of the thread. It could have been a 10mm or a .45. Caliber is immaterial. No handgun is guaranteed to stop 100% of the time. Nothing is guaranteed. THAT is the point of the thread.

Jeff

Pretty sure that Jeff Cooper didn't say anything about handguns are only good to fight your way to a rifle.

I believe that it was in fact Clint Smith from Thunder Ranch who popularized that phrase.

Yup: There are documented cases where someone absorbed several 12 gauge slugs and kept going, and that will trump any 10mm, 44 or 45 pistol.

Any kind of a shooting you may get into is going to mess up your lifestyle for a long time - if you still have a life. What Jeff is saying is that if you don't have solid bone between your ears, your brain is by far the best weapon you have.

But it won't do you a bit of good if you don't learn how to use it. :scrutiny:
