Article is here.
"I don't carry a gun," said Houston Texans owner Bob McNair, whose personal wealth dwarfs that of any of his players. "I don't think I need a gun. I don't think the players need guns and if they need guns, they're going to places they shouldn't be."

The NFL strongly discourages gun ownership and gives presentations describing their dangers, a league spokesman said.

"In some circumstances, such as for sport or protection, you may legally possess a firearm or other weapon," the NFL policy says. "However, we strongly recommend that you not do so. Any weapon, particularly a firearm, is dangerous — especially so when it is in a vehicle or within reach of children and others not properly trained in its use."

NFL players are targets in public, especially the ones who drive flashy cars and have an ignorant amount of diamonds on their watch or other jewelry. Protection is needed (legally).

Without sounding distasteful, a gun could have saved Sean Taylor's life but he choose a machete.

Bet he has bodyguards instead.

Like the street or their own homes perhaps?

Idiot.

As a Houstonian, he should know better that to say such idiotic things.

There are some NFL players that should just not be allowed to go out in public without a babysitter and those guys shouldn't have anything that goes boom.

Likewise there are some NFL players that are responsible and are proud defenders of the 2A.

The owner comparing himself to pro athletes makes no sense. McNair may be rich, but he's not a star and not in the same culture as the pro athletes. These athletes are in their prime physically and have plenty of cash to burn. McNair is an out-of-touch billionaire.

I fixed it for you. Taylor had legal issues that prevented him from legally possessing a gun, or that at least scared him from possessing a gun. The point is that pro athletes are targets, especially as the economy goes further south.

Like it or not, the NFL is a BUSINESS. And they are simply trying to protect their assets (or is that asshats?) by preventing damage to their players. There have been a number of recent gun-related incidents where dumb NFL players have either injured themselves or landed themselves in legal trouble due to failure to observe safe handling and follow local laws.

Honestly, though, I can understand WHY they get in trouble, though: they're constantly traveling between states, laws vary in different states. They're tired, they're busy, they've got a LOT to think about. Long story short, they are distracted gun owners with too much to keep track of at once.

Should they own guns? Absolutely. However, I do not think they are good candidates for carrying, at least not outside their home state. When they go on the road, they should leave their guns at home. There's just too much trouble to be had from anti-gun states like New York and California, and too many different laws to keep track of. When they're on the road, they're really not out anywhere they'd need a gun, either.

The NFL needs to go screw itself. A "No guns on road trips" rule is one thing, but taking an overall anti-gun stance is quite another.

Instead of a "no guns" policy, the NFL needs a "no idiots" policy.

Unfortunately, that would be bad for business, all that would remain would be a few quarterbacks and kickers.

Uh-oh, another organization that is gun free. I say we boycott the NFL! No more watching football on the weekends! For that matter, let's not watch college football either. They probably share the same belief.

Should we really be taking advice from the owner of the Texans? Geez look at their life time record. Maybe the biggest losers in the NFL.

Rather then prohibit gun ownership we should just keep athletes from going where they should not go such as dog fights, bars, casinos, home, other houses, streets, stadiums, automobiles, resteraunts and just about everywhere else. That will keep them out of trouble.

Again, we-uns are viewed as the fringe element and the NFL views damage to its image as a very costly thing. Plax Buress and all the other dopie gun incidents with NFL players can erode sponsorship $$$. So, the key would seem to be to find out which sponsors are so sensitive and let THEM know your stance on the NFL (pardon the pun).

I don't think the players need guns and if they need guns, they're going to places they shouldn't be.

Like the Lane Bryant clothing store in Tinley Park, Illinois?

...or the New Life Church in Colorado Springs?

...or a Wendy's in West Palm Beach FL?

...or who could forget Luby's Restarunt in TX?

yep all very bad and seady places where people should never go...

Lets be honest whats going on here.

There is a deeply buried impulse in our culture to discourage blacks from possessing arms.

The NFL discouraging its players to not own guns is simply an extension of this underlying bigotry ... it comes from the same soft-racism "we know whats best for you" attitude that most white liberals suffer from.

Boycott the NFL if they don't respect the 2A. Write the editors of papers. Write the owners. Write the commissioner. Write sportscasters.

If they refuse to listen, cancel ESPN, stop going to games, and stop buying merchandise. They get rich because WE pay them!

They are an example of a pampered overpaid industry out of touch with the common man. They should keep their opinions to themselves and shut up and play ball and accept meager salaries to do so.

You guys still actually watch pro football???

The NFL is garbage---the money ruined it around 1990-91---I haven't watched a game since.

I gobble up college football on sats---on sunday--I have better things to do.

I'm more interested in the position of the WWE on gun control. :barf:

With the intellectual level of a lot of the players (The leg shootist for one). He might be on to something. Maybe the super star sports idiots shouldn't carry a gun.

Plax should have moved to a free state while he still had the chance... much like Tank Johnson just did. And granted, he should have been paying more attention to local laws and carrying with a holster rather than the band of his sweat pants. But does he deserve 3.5 years in prison for what he did? I certainly think not. He had no ill intent, and hurt no one but himself. I am hoping that this incident can shed some light on just how retarded these gun laws are... there is going to be some uproar when he gets sent to prison for this... and there is no way to avoid him going. From what I've been reading, he will be subject to the *mandatory* minimum sentence.

Sean Taylor was a convicted felon, and therefore a machete was his only option. He was following the law by not having a gun.

Mr McNair most assuredly has a right to free speech.

Just as I have a right not to patronize his 'business'.

I would encourage others to do the same. I believe I still have that right.

If you watch now, just think of how much more range time time you might get.
