The Old .30-06: How many still have it as a MAIN Rifle?

With a custom tailored handload the .30-06 can do just about anything I personally need done with a rifle. There was a time when I had many rifles in many different calibers, I've culled them down to just two calibers, .30-06 and .22lr. I went the same direction with handguns, If I can't get the job done with a .38/.357 then I grab the 06.

An old Rem 700 in 30-06 is my go to elk rifle. Used to use it for everything, however, picked up a .270 win recently. I use the .270 for deer (and pronghorn if I ever draw...).

Smith357, is that a high capacity magazine on that BAR or what? It looks huge!

That is a ten round magazine hanging out of that Remington 742. It's a project I put together as a poor mans battle rifle. I could not find a 20 round magazine. :) The problem with the 742 though it's a dandy hunting rifle, it was never designed to run hot and dirty like a real battle rifle, and it starts to jam up after 20-30 rounds.

After 40 plus years of trying different calibers I "found" the 06 and its been love ever since. Loaded with Barnes bullets it shoots lengthwise thru elk. Is like lightning on deer and can stand in on yotes. Wish I had found it years ago. I did most of my hunting with a 270 and thats a darn good caliber also. FRJ

My mistake. It's a beautiful rifle. As a battle rifle, 10 rounds of .30-06 will make anyone or anything think twice, lol. As a hunting rig, you could really feel comfortable going after pretty much anything on the NA continent.

Better still - the BAR mags were 20 round boxes. There're great stories outa Marine Raiders (look for "The Right Kind of War") about taking off the bipod and brake of BARs and gunning up a whole patrol with BARs, Thompsons and M-2s to fool the Japanese into thinking it was a Garand, Thompson and carbine patrol (before M-2s were common) and unleashing a whirlwind of hell on initial contact with EVERYTHING going full auto!

No. Gave my Remington 700 BDL to my youngest son. The Tikka T3 Hunter in 6.5x55 SE is now my MAIN rifle. It's easier on my sixty seven year old shoulder and will do just about everything the 06' did. More accurate too.;)

One of my main rifles is a JC Higgins Model 50 in 30-06. It uses an FN commercial Mauser action and a High Standard barrel. It's wonderfully accurate and I use it a lot. It's a bit heavy and I sometimes use a 6.5 lb 308 instead. But if the hunting doesn't require a lot of lugging and climbing, it's the 30-06.

I use it with 150 grain Winchester Power Points for deer, 180 grain Partitions for elk or similar. If the hunting calls for a heavier bullet I use a 358 or 45/70.
