A classic story of a man in a SHTF scenario. This is the first movie I ever saw Heston in except "Tombstone" & he was only in that for about a minute. He's actually a pretty good actor. Too bad he has alzheimers or I'd send him a letter saying so. :(

This movie is being remade with Will Smith as the lead in "I am Legend" which is supposed to come out 12/14/07. You can see the trailer for that version here.

To help keep this gun related, what type of gun is that that Neville carries everywhere? What type of scope is on that rifle in part either 2 or 3? If it was me, I'd take a supressed MP5 since there would be no laws. Good rate of fire & a quieter in enclosed spaces.

Enjoy.

P.S. This is a horror movie. It's not exactly gorey like "Saw" but your kids might have nightmares afterwards. Just thought I'd say something.

Charlie was packing a 9mm S&W M79 submachine gun when he was rolling around in his vehicle. For home defense, Charlie had a modified WWII 30-06 Brown Automatic Rifle (BAR) with the state of the art infrared night sights. Those sights were almost as big as the BAR. On his hip, was I believe a GI .45 ACP 1911A1.

I think Omega Man was produced when the M-16 was still new, and as such, the M-16 did not see too much screen time in movies made during that period. Other weapons, such as the HK MP-5 series were probably still ideas at the time.

Just one more thing. Before Charlie did Omega Man, Vincient Price did Last Man on Earth, which was also based on the book I Am Legend. Last Man on Earth is also worth watching and is floating in the DVD discount bin somewhere out there.

I recommend Soylent Green, Midway, Earthquake, Airport 1975, and the original Planet of the Apes to further your Heston cinematic experience. :D

I just watched Omega Man last week, Cant wait for Legend and I will look for Last man on earth. Need more movies like this.

I know. You can see that version for free here.

I haven't seen the Vincent Price version so I can't say how likely it is to give kids nightmares.

Operator, I meant if this happened today. I'm sure Heston made good choices for that time period. After all he was the NRA president.:D

Instead of a BAR for the balcony, I'd have used a M1 Garand back then & now. Accurate with a decent amount of power.

I always thought "The Omega Man" was a great premise looking for a great execution. I'm amazed it hasn't been remade yet.

The Colt SP-1 had been available since 1963 and the MP-5 since 1966, but both probably weren't on the top of every gun guy's go to list when the movie was made. Hell, in the mid-1960s you could have a new FN FAL mailed to your house from an outfit in Chicago, whose name now escapes me.

Do not forget The Ten Commandments and Ben Hur.

The book is a horror novel. Does anybody know if the Will Smith version follows the vampire storyline or is it like the Charlton Heston version?

The versions are comparable. If memory serves, vampirism was the result of a disease. The "need to feed" was just downplayed in the Heston version.

I stand corrected, the M76 is the sub gun, the M79 is the grenade launcher, which has been replaced by the M203.

In part 3 Mathais says about Neville, "Nothing to live for except his memories. Nothing to live with except his cars, gadgets & guns."

That's good enough for me.:D

I'm going to make that my new signature.

Possible spoiler in response to:

I hear its similar, but they're not vampires but rather mutant creature, long talons and super human jumping/speed.

Can't wait...

Let's not forget that many of Heston's action movies had strong anti-war messages: Omega Man battled remnants of humanity infected from the results of biological warfare. Planet of the Apes I & II was a world where mankind destroyed itself thru nuclear weapons, and Soylent Green was a commentary on overpopulation and destruction of the Eco-system with corporations running the world. All subjects still discussed/worried about today and much changed from the original books/short stories that they were adapted from.

I am Legend was and is a drab and depressing short story, it is one time where I think the Hollywood version will be better than the book.

Don't forget to remove your flash suppressors.....in the "Omega Man", the beedy eyed albinos had light sensitive eyes. If a bullet didn't slow them down, the muzzle flash should.

Not in that time period ('71)
And his open support of the GCA three years earlier would have help to limit what he could readily been able to obtain in the beginning of the end

"The Mountain Men" is a great one as well. Thanks for mentioning that.

But please don't watch the whole pirate copy of "Omega Man." I don't mind a bootleg copy of old and out of print movies or films that will never make it to Region 1, but the "Omega Man" DVD is only a few bucks at the grocery store. Heston has done a lot for us, so stealing from him ain't exactly playing fair.
