The truth about handgun knockdown power

11 shots to the chest and head with a .357 mag and he still had to be fought off?? I CALL BS on that one. Thats pure bull. I would have to see it. Not going to happen! Did the head shot scrape his ear lobe? With any good ammo the guy would be shot in half!! I think stories like are like the guy who shot a deer 3 times in the chest with a .300 Win mag and the deer ran a half mile and kept going. He claimed a heart shot as being one of the 3 shots. well with snow on the ground we tracked the deer. when we caught up with it and i dropped it with one shot to the head we could see the 3 chest shots were no where near the chest. one gut shot, one just above the knee and his third shot missed. I just plain call BS on the 11 shots with a .357 mag to the chest and head and he is still fighting story.

I'm pretty sure that I'm describing the same incident as the other poster.

It was 10 shots using .38+P and not all were to the chest/head. 4 were chest shots, one was to the wrist, one was to the head (penetrated the skull but missed the brain) one was to the pelvis and the remaining shots were to the thorax/abdomen.

There was an autopsy done in this case, there is no question as to the placement of the shots.

kgpcr, it's for real

The incident was used in formal training at the federal academy I attended.

The man was shot numerous times, at least once in the head and several to the main body mass.

What was not discussed was the exact placement of the wounds, what internal organs were damaged and so forth. Still, I'd have thought he would have had less fight in him than the surviving officer reported.

Two lessons from that particular encounter are:

- Things don't always go as planned.

- Life is not always convenient.

That's probably why the previous poster thought it happened in CA. Ayoob's article mentioned that Chaney had done a "videotape for the Huntington Police Department".

Well we are down to 4 in the chest and one head shot that did not hit the brain. Jaw shot? We are also down to a .38 instead of a .357mag. Chest is a big area. again thorax shots may be good maybe not if they dont hit anything. Chest is considered from the neck to the bottom of the rib cage. an off center hit that does not hit vitals is just that. Again a clear case of how things get blow WAY our of proportion. Also when you look at shootings you cant look at one freak shooting. I may win the lottery tonight but the odds are way way low but some one will win it. of the thousands of shootings that happen, a good hit or two with a .357 and up .40 10mm .45 with good ammo and its game over 99.9999 percent of the time. Will they drop instantly every time? no but soon so just keep shooting. If i shoot some one in the shoulder with a .357 or my .40 it will be useless if i hit it square. Just dont go into a gun fight under gunned! Big holes are always better than small holes!

The head shot penetrated in through the top of the skull at a backward & downward angle. The autopsy showed that it did not disrupt any critical portions of the brain although it did stun Mullery temporarily.

The ammunition used was 125gr JHP .38sp +P.

All right here's a rundown of the hits--as close to the order that they were delivered as it is possible to know.

Forearm near wrist
Chest
Chest
Left side of thorax near spleen (muzzle contact)
Center of mass near the diaphragm (near muzzle contact)
Top of head (near muzzle contact)
Chest
Chest
Abdomen
Right Hip

These kinds of shootings happen from time to time. A person can either learn from them or attempt to dismiss them because they don't fit into their personal concept of reality.

The idea that simply stepping up in caliber will make a big difference is not solidly founded in reality. There's been at least one incident of a person surviving a heart shot from a .357Mag. A female police officer, in fact.

As far as knockdown power goes, here's a thread I posted on another forum.

Not to argue but a .357 mag would have tore a massive chunk of his skull off. I have shot many things with a .357 and the hole it leaves is a hell of a lot bigger than a .38+P. Again a .357 to the heart? Gotta see it. you just can live with a 2''hole in your heart. Now maybe after penetrating a vest and all maybe but not a clean shot with a .357mag. Could it happen Yes it is possible but NOT the norm!
