It was chilly and windy on Wagnon Mountain this morning for this local fun match.

The rules are easy...you have two-minutes to knock down 10 rams at 50 feet with a semi-auto pistol; 10 pigs at 25 yards with a semi-auto rifle; and, finally 10 little chickens at 50 yards with a bolt-action, bipod-equipped scoped rifle. You may use whatever optics you wish but most used open sighted pistols and scoped rifles. You do this twice and your final score is the number of silhouettes remaining standing.

A steady pace is much more effective than giving it the gas.

My resources only allow me to post a relatively short video. So, I could not get anyone's full run to post. But, here is our friend, Andrew, working through the pistol and semi-auto rifle part of the drill.

Kemosabe, here is our Rimfire Match Director's write-up of last weekends match. Round count? Each firearm has ten rounds in its box or tube magazine, so ten targets and ten rounds. In the three years we have been shooting this particular match, folks have gone ten for ten on a particular strong here and there. But, no one has knocked all thirty over in a single run. I have left two or three up out of the entire thirty a couple of times when the stars were aligned.

Ricochets have not been a major problem - just a concern. We require eye protection. The worst case of lead splatter comes back from 50 feet or 25 yards and may sting a bit. They don't draw blood. Never makes it back from the 50 yard line.

"Seasonal temperatures and a brisk easterly breeze greeted our seven intrepid competitors this cloudy morning at the Crooked Oak Range. This is a fun match that always seems to be far more challenging than ever expected in requiring both speed and accuracy. Danny Creasy started us off and his unhurried, well-focused way made the rest of us confident that we, too, could do alright. Ha! We either shot poorly or experienced a series of jams and malfunctions. In any case, Danny - as he is wont to do - handily showed the rest of us how this game is supposed to be played.

Results:

1st 11 Pts - Danny Creasy - S&W 41, Open, CCI Blazer - Win. 190, Weaver K3, Aguila SV - CZ 452 American, Weaver GS, SK Std+
2nd 19 Pts - Randy King - Ruger MkII, Simmons, CCI SV - Ruger 10/22, Nikon Prostaff, CCI SV - CZ 455, Weaver 40/44, CCI SV
3rd 25 Pts - Ulus Farris - Ruger MkII, Simmons, Fed 510 - Remington 597, Tasco, Fed 510 - CZ452, Weaver Grand Slam, Fed 510
4th (Tie) 31 Pts - Andrew Butler - Brn. Buckmark, Open, CCI SV - Ruger 10/22, Bushnell, Win Xpert - CZ 452 UL, Simmons, CCI SV
4th (Tie) 31 Pts - Bill Parkhurst - Hi Std Trophy, Open, CCI SV - Ruger 10/22, Weaver V16, CCI SV - CZ 455, Clearidge, Tac-22
6th 34 Pts - Mike Z. - Ruger 22/45, Browning, Aguila SV - Marlin 39, Bushnell, CCI SV - Savage MkII, Simmons, CCI SV
7th 40 Pts - Peary Willard - Hi Std Supermatic, Open CCI SV - TC Classic, Tasco, Fed 510 - Kimber 82, Barska, Fed 714

Special recognition to Danny for another outstanding match. He makes it look easy. And also to Peary and Andrew who maintained equanimity while experiencing more than their fair share of equipment failures. It's difficult to keep your cool when your equipment goes south. Balky bipods and magazines were particular problems."

Danny: Thanks for the reply. Two of my buddies and I are going to the range tomorrow and give your game a try. We only have enough metallic silhouettes to do a half course, so well set up 5, 5 and 5 and cut the time in half.

I'll get back to you and let you know how it went.

PS - How far apart are the targets placed from each other?

I'm not kidding here - you should call it The One Minute Drill and only allow one minute instead of two. Well, allowing for station changes, a minute and 15 seconds.

Danny - We went to the range yesterday only to find it padlocked. All of us forgot that it’s now deer season here and the range is closed until it’s over. We’ll try again around January and maybe by then we’ll have all the targets that we need for the full 2 minute drill.
