I walked into a gunsmith today to get the barrel of my Speed Six shortened and turned into a pocket gun. After about an hour, I walked out with my Speed Six intact and a S&W 442 in my pocket...

Still not sure what happened, but I'm not complaining. I still think I'll get the Six re-blued at some point. It is a "US" stamped SS84L that was used as a range gun, but still seems to lock up pretty well. Already replaced the grips, but its got some rough spots in the finish that need some attention...

I have nothing against honest wear on a revolver finishes , it`s neglect that`s ugly !!

Holster wear is the norm for blued & adds character !!

Looks like you have a good gunsmith. The 442 is a great pocket piece. I would leave the Speed Six the way it is, it would be an anchor in the pocket with no barrel.

One of the revolvers used by US military was 4" barreled .38 made by Strum & Ruger.

The Speed Six US marked will retain better value if left as is from the eyes of a collector. But it is yours to do with as you wish. Pretty sweet as is IMO, nice "character" showing. Makes one wonder how many troops of which branch held and shot it over the years? Or is the wear and tear came afterwards?

In any case, I think your LGS did you a service, tho learning and getting up to speed on a 442 is not as much fun as shooting the Speed Six would be.

I like both revolvers you're talking about. I carry a M442 daily and I have a short barrel Service-Six in .357 Magnum. I think you will carry both and be happy with both.

If it were mine I would keep the Six just as it is. Nothing wrong (in my book), with a little honest wear on a gun, especially more so with its U.S. markings. I think you'll also be very pleased with your new Model 442 as a CCW.
