Long story short, I used the Hogue rubber wrap grips but it was really fat in my hands, switched to the blackwood wooden grips off Sig's site. They're nice but same issue was with the Hogue rubber ones. I'd like something comfortable, not too abrasive but thin. Any recommendations?

Take a look at the Hogue website. At either G10 micarta options, or even thinner aluminum grips.

I'm not a SIG person, but I'd think the fattest grips available for that gun would be a Hogue rubber wrap around grip followed by wood grips. It seems as if you've been to the two thickest options and nearly anything else you choose would be thinner.

I'd think the standard P228 rubber grips would be thinner than what you've tried. I don't know if the E2 grips can be put on the P228, but those would be thinner for sure. SIG used to offer a thinner version of their standard grips, but they may have dropped them when the E2 grips became available and I didn't see them on their website.

The late Stephen A. Camp has an article on his Hi-Powes and Handguns site where he puts slim grips on his P220 and shows the difference, but I can't get to his site right now otherwise I'd give you a direct link. I don't know if these are available for the P228, though.

Edit to add: Here is the direct link to the thin grips for the P220 article

Like JTQ I'm not sure if the E2 grips can be fitted to the P228. I have them on my P229 and really like how comfortable and ergonomic they feel, especially since I have relatively small hands. I would contact SIG to see if it could be done.

My problem with the 228 wasn't the grips...it was the long trigger reach. This was cured by changing to the shorter trigger and everyone just loves that gun.:)

^ Yep. But I have found the factory stock black plastic grips to be about the thinnest available; Hogues (AKA "Goodyears") and any wood or G10 stocks will be fatter. Get the short trigger (available from Midway, Brownells, Top Gun Supply) combined with the OEM stocks and you should be good to go (although the pistol won't be as pretty as it would be with cool VZ or exotic wood stocks).

Also, don't confuse the SIG Short (reach) Trigger with the SRT, short reset trigger (which is also superb, I might add).

For me, the E2 grips have a big bulge near the top which forces my thumbs lower where I don't want them. The original grip configuration works best for me, and I've got good sized hands.

I have yet to have my gun worked on and I do plan to send it off for a trigger job and to add a short reach trigger at least.

The aluminum grips are about as thin a grip as one will find. I put some old style SIG ones on my P226 and Hogue makes them too. If you shoot in cold weather though they can be uncomfortable to bare hands.
