While I was cleaning my Remington 870 I removed the trigger assembly by removing the push pins just like the instructions said. I forgot to put the safety on and while it was completely removed I touched the trigger and the hammer dropped.

I continued reading the instructions and it specifically said never to let the hammer drop while the trigger assembly is removed from the gun. I reinstalled it and it worked fine (cycled dummy rounds).

I'm just wondering if something might be broken that I didn't catch and if this is a serious issue before I go to the range.

Any ideas why they specifically mention this in the direction booklet?

Thanks in advance for your input...

No.

Just don't ever do it again! :fire:

It is never wise to snap the hammer on any gun while it is apart.

The hammer hits the trigger housing instead of the bolt and firing pin, and they are not designed to take the shock load forever.

When the trigger plate assembly is pulled and you release the hammer it hits the underside of the shell lifter, not the housing. Probably not good but the 870 can take it. Don't worry! Just don't keep doing it.

It probably didn't do any harm. If the gun still cycles properly and functions as it should, I don't think anything was damaged.

When I remove the trigger assembly, I always put the safety on. It is OK to pull the trigger with the trigger assembly out of the gun PROVIDED that you block the hammer with your thumb or finger to keep it from hitting the shell carrier (lifter). It makes it easier to get the trigger assembly clean if the hammer is forward. Just be sure to put the hammer back into the cocked position before putting the trigger assembly back into the receiver.

If you didn't hear the rattle of parts pinging off the ceiling and skittering across the floor, you most likely didn't hurt anything. It isn't a good thing to do on a regular basis though...

I did the same thing the other day, was pretty worried cause I knew that I wasn't supposed to press the trigger, but the safety somehow got pushed off and the trigger went off when I was using a rag to clean the trigger!

870

Hey, everybody has done it, and if they lie about that, then they lie about other things too. Not a big deal. DON'T do it again. Actually, I own several 870's, but I've never done it.:neener:

Much more serious potential with an 1100 than with an 870 in any event. First thing I usually do when I pull the trigger assembly is un-cock the hammer, then it can't happen.
