Been out hunting locally since Thanksgiving, opting to stay close to home this year as opposed to going far north and camping out like I usually do. Wake up, trudge to my spot, watch a doe pass by once or twice, then nothing. Went on like that until today when instead of the doe I see a decent sized buck. Not big, not small, just a generally decent looking deer.

Wait until he get's a little closer and walks out from behind the brush, raise my shotgun (1897 Trench gun reproduction) and can't see the front bead. When I got to my spot I forgot to rack it and load a round. I cursed at myself because I know as soon as I move that slide he's going to bolt (It's not the most subtle sounding shotgun in the world) so I tried and sure enough he bolted.

Since I started hunting I used what was on hand. I collect the Military Surplus stuff, Mosin 91/30's, Mausers, the Trench Gun, used an old Springfield during muzzleloading season. So that's generally what I bring with me and have had some decent success.

But as of late I've been thinking of getting something new that's multipurpose and I won't have to worry about as much.

Came across an ad a few days ago for a Remington 870 Express, 2 barrels, fully rifled for deer, and another with a extra full choke for turkey season.

Searched around on this forum and hear nothing but good things about it, except for the J lock safety and just was wondering if anyone else here had one and could relate some experiences with them?

Thanks in advance everyone.

The '97 has a tremendous amount of drop at comb. It requires (for me) a deliberate cheek weld (cheek off the stock) to see the front bead.
Most shotguns from this era have similar stock diminsions.

You would be hard pressed to find a better (affordable) first hunting shotgun than the 870.

I have one, along with 10 million other people(later next year, the remington factory in Ilion, NY will crank out its 10 millionth 870), and after selling nearly 10 million 870s over the past 50 years, they are still THE most popular shotgun made, period. That alone should be a testament to the design.

It's worth noting - that no shotgun on the planet will fix the problem of not having a round in the chamber. They're all gonna make noise when you work the pump. :D

Nothing says love like a shotgun with a Bayonet lug and a heat shield. God knows I've been tempted to take my 520 Stevens trench hunting with the Bayo attached.

Get the goods

If you hit a sporting goods store or Kmart, don't let them talk you into the Mossberg 500. Sometimes when they don't carry/are out of one they try to talk you into the other. As someone who's had both, they're not the same, and the difference in price is almost nothing.

The MB tends to be more sensitive to fouling and really just is not as nice a gun.

I recommend the 870 highly (as someone who's got a 12 and a 20 and has given several 20s as gifts). Happy shooting.

Yeah but I'll tell ya, my old Ithaca is like an electric car when pumped, the trench gun sounds like a diesel freight train compared to it lol.

Again much appreciated everyone.
