Thinking about a 1911

I also prefer the Commander size version of the 1911. For me the gun just seems to balance better with the shorter slide configuration. One way I found to have a Commander or Officer's size gun in .45 ACP "shoot softer" is to use lighter weight bullets, like the 185 and 200 grain variety, when I handload my ammo. There's less muzzle flip and muzzle blast when I use loads that were made for the shorter guns.

I almost pulled the trigger today on a literally new in box Colt Commander LW 9mm likely maybe a 60s gun, but it wasn't quite what I have been looking for. I have been wanting a Colt Series 70 MK IV in 9mm. I did end up with a real nice S&W Model 28-2 4" so Merry Christmas to me on that note. :)

I'd had performed self- surgery right there and gave the the left one for that gun! I have a friend who inherited his Dad's. I've shot it, and it is the perfect CCW (for a 9mm) IMHO. Since it was his Dad's, he'll never sell it, but there is a one-year old boy (my friend's grandson) who will be very lucky in the future........

The Colt Commander I mentioned will likely be there. Hell, Jimmy thought I would balk when he said he wanted $1,500 out the door and I told him I had no issues with the price. I have some travel plans to see friends in NC and after that trip I'll inspect my wallet for any remaining mad money. :) The gun was nothing but sweet though.

I saw one of those recently at the LGS that was USMC marked. Apparently they ordered a few thousand for Marine Corps Aviators. It wasn't in great shape but it sold within a day for $750.

In your price range the Ruger is hands down the best choice, in my opinion. The Remingtons scare me. There is a lot a chatter about lots of QC problems with Remington since their last change in ownership. A Remington 1911 is just a Para 1911 rebranded Remington. Remington bought them. As you may recall, Para has had a real sketchy history. The stuff from the Philippines have a huge following. The good news is that they supposedly have great customer support. The bad news is that you stand a good chance of needing it. In this price range Ruger is the only one that I would consider. You are going to get a cast gun with MIM parts at this price point. You might as well get one made by the people who unquestionably have the cast thing down pat.

If you are patient and can come up with another hundred or so you could maybe find a decent used Dan Wesson. You can pay more for a 1911 made by Dan Wesson, but you can not get a better gun.
