thinking about a 30.30

odd i should read this post today. a few weeks ago i purchased a nice win 94.had never got around to shooting it till today.it is pre saftey.with my loads of 100 grn hornady short jackets it would shoot 3 shots with holes touching at 50 yrds.i was pleasently surprised as im not that good of a shot with iron sites.i got it for $325 at a local gun show.

i also have a savage bolt 340 and a marlin 336.they all shoot good.with about any ammo.i really cant imagine being without a 30-30 of some kind.

the win handles better and is lighter, the savage and the marlin are easy to mount scopes on.take your pick.

I have owned several marlin 336s and several winchester 94s and of the two I prefer the marlins. I like the older guns with the smooth wood stocks. The checked stocks don't feel right to me plus it seems like the forend is thicker. I like thin.

And the crossbolt safety doesn't bother me at all. It lets me safely cycle my gun to unload plus if I want to run a box of handloads through the gun to check for funtion and fit I can do so without fear of an AD in my house. If you are afraid you might accidently bump the safety on during a hunt the safety can be disabled but slipping a small O-ing over it and into the red groove.

I like a short barreled lever action 30-30 , 16-17 inch barrel and a large ghost ring style aperture sigh.. of course as my eye are getting older a small 4X power works real nice...

Add the Hornady bullets and it is a great 200 yard deer rifle...

Just a few short years ago, I would never have put a scope on a lever rifle. Now, my bifocals have made shooting with iron sights difficult.

I just put a red dot sight on my son's .22. Wow! What a difference.

Now I'm thinking about a red-dot or reflex on my .30-30.

The durdy-turdy has been killing deer in the upper midwest for several generations. Lots of my friends killed their first deer with one, and most of them still have that gun as their "go-to" white tail rifle. You won't regret it, and if you reload, your brass will likely be nearly free.

I have a '74 win94, trapper with peep site.
I'd add the accuracy is impressive at 100yards. Simple

A lever-action rifle chambered in 30-30 is fun and relatively economical. I handload cast plinkers for about 20 cents per round. Plenty of power for deer and hogs out to 100 yards or so with factory ammo. I like my M94 just fine and shoot it often.

Everybody should have one. Packs a punch, ammo is EVERYWHERE, guns are fun, what's not to like.

I bugged a guy to buy his .303 Enfield thinking that ammo would be everywhere. NOT. The problem with .303 is that it's just popular enough that when they get it in, people buy it...but not so popular that they stock a lot of it.

You will never have that problem with .30-30. Everybody will have lots of it.

Along with the .45s, it is rather the quintessential all-American caliber.
