Thinking of .22 Revolver but which one?

Just so you know, the K frame is classified by Smith and Wesson as a Medium sized frame. They consider the N frame (44 and 45 calibers as well as some 357Mags) to be a large frame.

This is correct. When I classified the K frame as "large" earlier, I meant large relative to (currently) available .22 revolvers.

Sorry for any confusion or misunderstanding.

Yes, K-frame is considered medium, but most of the K-22s out there have a 6" barrel. That makes for a sizeable gun. Mine came with a holster, but I can't think of any situation where I'd actually carry it. It's strictly a range gun for me.

Lots of good suggestions on this thread. Thanks again for all the responses and great pictures.
I will have to hunt around for some of these models so that I can get the feel of it before I buy.
Again there is not much here in central Jersey for me to look at.

I've heard some lessons buying guns. I went to LGS and fell in love with a Kahr PM9, I fondled it, dry fired it. Trigger was decent. I left and came back to buy it, but it was gone, I had them order one for me. It was the identical model, but had a horrible trigger. Well now, I generally buy a trigger with a gun wrapped around it.

Fortunately for you, almost all 22 revolvers have pretty nice triggers in SA mode. If it is DA/SA check the DA trigger.

In a single action .22 revolver a Ruger Single Six with an extra .22 Magnum cylinder is hard to beat.

S&W still makes some of the best double action .22s and this older Model 34 Kit Gun is one sweet shooting gun with it's 4" barrel and adjustable rear sight. Only thing in need of a change was getting the Hogue MonoGrip in place of the small factory grips.

My first 22 revolver was a Colt New Frontier with a 4 1/2 or 5/8 barrel at the age of 10.
Fired thousands of rounds through it the first couple years shooting rats and skunks at night at the dump at my grandparents hometown when I visited and squirrel and rabbit in the grove at home. by the time I was 14 I was carrying it on my trapline.
That gun accounted for a truckload of rats, fur and food. In my early 20's I picked up a MKI Ruger Target and the little Colt mostly set.
Picked a matching Colt up in those years and now each of my boys has one, the youngest pilled up some rabbits with his last weekend. I'm a fan of both the Colt and Ruger SA 22's with the adjustable sights. I'd take a Ruger MKI or II before a DA personally. My 22 of choice today is a Kimber Raptor with a conversion, nice and light and dead on accurate.

Variety is the spice of life and yes, I think everyone who shoots 22 handguns needs a semi-auto pistol in 22LR as well. I have a lot of fun shooting the SR22-P (Ruger), but for anything serious, I prefer my Ruger Mark II (heavy barrel) or my old High Standard Victor. The variety aspect is why I consider single actions in addition to double actions and pistols. But the Ruger SR22-P or the LCR in 22 are nice guns to tote in the woods if you aren't planning any precision shooting.

Change cylinders on a Ruger or Colt SA.... too much trouble for me. Just buy a gun in both 22LR and 22 WMR if 22 mag appeals to ya. I could handle a Single Nine in 22 mag simply because I know I won't shoot it much and the slow rate of fire and reload is not an issue with more expensive 22 mag ammo.

To the OP, I think you have it right. But I would wait until the reviews start showing up on the Ruger GP-100 in 22LR before I purchased. However, you can't go wrong with a S&W Model 17/18 or 4" 617. I just don't care for the 6".

Catpop Clark,
what does skunk taste like? Never had any.uh
Catpop

It depends on how you cook it. One procedure is to make a pile of skunks and coons. Wait for them to ferment. That is as far as we got.

I have had a heritage and a ruger single six, I liked the ruger. the heritage worked for a cheap plinker.

I let both of those go years ago.

I got the bug again last year for a dual cylinder (.22 and .22 mag) sa revolver and ended up buying the Pietta 1873 S.A. revolver in 22 and 22 mag. I dont get to shoot it much as my 14 year tends to claim it at the range, but, all in all for the $250 I paid for it on sale, it is a pretty decent and accurate range/plinking/fun gun.

As others have said, you cant go wrong with the single six, but the pietta has been decent for me and is a bit cheaper, they were around 300 when not on sale.

I did just notice that the ones currently at Cabelas are .22 only, and do not include the mag cylinder. Kind of weird, but maybe due to .22 mag scarcity they stopped shipping them with both.
