I was looking for a gun that is possible to carry in town, as well as capable of taking pigs or deer.

The first choice was a nice “pro series” 686 plus which turned into a giant hassle, turned me off to any current S&W offering, and kind of killed the Revolver bug for me.

Sooooo 10mm. I’m looking at the ruger. I know it’s no Wilson, but I was wondering what you guys think? Any other suggestions for sub $1200 or so?

I don’t care for the non ramped barrel and partial case head support of the Colts, though I know many argue it’s a non issue. Same with the Glocks. And the CZ style guns have too long of a trigger reach for me, at least in DA.

If you want a revolver, the GP100 is very capable and well priced.

A .45ACP 1911 would be less expensive and you can use less expensive ammo. I understand that you can get some pretty hot .45ACP +P loads that will be about 10mm power for when you go deer or hog hunting.

I carried Dan Wesson 10 mms for years.. Wonderful guns and cartridge. 10 MM is doing at 100 yards what a .45 is doing at the muzzle. It will work on pigs and white tail deer quite well.
Out on the ranch I dropped a coyote at 80 yards with my CCO version.. Put a lot of injured critters out of their misery and quite a few pests too.
When I moved back to town, I dropped back to a .45ACP Colt Defender.. I think the 10mm has too much horsepower for in town circumstances.

Country gun? Hard to beat. EDC in civilization? Pretty salty for that.

Seems like Sig makes a 10mm?

A $500 Glock 20 and $100 LWD or KKM fully supported bbl is hard to beat.

Nearly twice the firepower of most 10mm pistols and nearly half the cost. Still end up with the all important fully supported ramp.

If you carry run of the mill 10mm in town like the avg watered down stuff most ammo manufacturers sale, I don't feel it's overkill for 2 legged critters. Basically 40 s&w +p with that stuff. Then when you want to hunt, grab 16 Underwood, Double Tap, or Buffalo Bore buttbusters and head to the woods.

I like Rugers. There are 3 of them in my small accumulation. With that said I would encourage you to go to the 1911 subforum at rugerforum.com & read the threads about the Ruger 10mm before purchase.

Are you talking the fixed sight model or the target version,I have the target version and it's built like a tank. It's been extremely reliable and as accurate as I can shoot, the down size to me as far as a carry gun it's not light carrying in a belt type holster you'll have a tough time keep your pants up. Paid $900 for mine.

My SR 1911 10mm has been 100% reliable. Very good fit and finish when the price is considered. The trigger has become really good after the first few hundred rounds and setting the adjustment screw. The factory adjustable sights are a good compromise for both indoor and outdoor use. Accuracy is good, especially with 200gr bullets. The bushing-less barrel uses a one piece guide rod. If your budget allows $1,200, you could consider stretching a little and look at Dan Wesson. I nearly bought a DW but I wasn't sure if I'd like a 10mm 1911. Turns out I love it. Buying the Ruger left money for more 10mm brass since I reload and 10mm autos tend to really launch brass.
