Due to the fact that Benelli parts are so d*mned expensive and somewhat hard to come by, I thought I might put my SuperNova tactical on "safe queen" status and replace it with a Mossberg for HD and heavy range time. Plus, I like the fact that this particular shotgun has a 9-shot capacity (20" barrel), according to Mossberg. Thoughts?

Also, I noticed this Mossberg 590 comes in a "heavy-walled" version. Im assuming this simply means a thicker, heavier duty barrel. Am I right on this? Thanks.

What exactly is so expensive about the Benelli Nova. I think it can be mall ninjaed out for the same price as anything.

Plus 3 1/2 in buckshot is just obscene. Only for practice though, it would suck for actual HD.

Anyway the Mossberg 590 would be way sweet and if you sold the Benelli you could almost break even id venture.

True. The SuperNova can be stocked up for about the same price as anything else. But, look around...."Ninja" parts arent nearly as available for Benellis as for other makes, unless we are talking about the Benelli "M" series. And as far as the price for replacement parts go, well....For instance, a new barrel for my gun lists at over $450. This is just shy of what I bought the gun for brand new.

Anyway, if I decide against the Mossberg, I will be going with a Remington 870 Police. Oh, and I dont plan on getting rid of the Benelli. It is a sweet shotty. Its just that I would rather put wear and tear on a shotgun that allows for greater/cheaper selection of parts...factory or otherwise. I just plan on keeping my SuperNova in "stored away" status...only to be fired once a year or so.

I got a used Remington 870 Wingmaster. Mine's rough looking and old. I don't know its exact age, but it has to be a couple of decades. Judging from its short barrel, corncob forend, and it's 2 3/4'' chamber, I'd say it's a police/riot model from the 70s.

It is smooth as butter, and it's one of my favorite guns. I will never sell it or trade it away.

What do you need on a HD gun that you can't find for a Nova? You don't have to make it tacicool, just make it work.

I am in a similar situation actually.
I am looking at a 590A1 with an 18.5 inch barrel Vs. a SuperNova Tactical. Cost of the Raw Gun is only about 50 bucks more for the Mossy, however I would still need to buy a stock that included a Pistol grip, which would be about another 125. So I am really torn.

I would like to know why you are considering retiring the Nova, it may help me in my decision.

And before anyone comments, the 870 is not and will not be in consideration.

IF you don't want an 870, you don't want an 870. The Mossberg 500/590 is also a good choice. Even the 870 lovers will admit that. :) If you look around, you can probably find a 500A (or if you're really on a budget, a Mav 88) with an M4-style adjustable stock including a pistol grip for a very affordable price. A shop near me has several in stock, but I couldn't get you the exact price off the top of my head, since I'm not in the market for one.

Honestly I think it is strictly between the 590A1 and the SuperNova Tactical. I have looked at a number of others and they just don't do it for me.

Right now I lean towards the Benelli since it already has everything I want at a good price, however if I ever do decide to upgrade the gun the Mossy looks like a better option.

Love my Mossberg 590 Marine.

Out of curiosity is the benelli the only one with a rotating locking bolt? I know the 870s I have shot were much simpler.

Greg,

The Winchester 1200/1300/FN Police pumps have rotating bolts too.

NEO,

Sell the 'nelli, save your shekels for a while, buy a cheap plain jane used 870 LEO trade-in, get the stock fitted to you with a premium recoil pad installed and take a shotgun class from Louis Awerbuck, Randy Cain or any of the other Shotgun Yodas curretly practicing their craft out there. You'll be a lot better off if you are really interested in your home defense fu and not just having a kewwl photo subject.

Lee Lapin,

I knew there was a voice of wisdom out there.

+1 on the use of the term Shotgun Yoda

My $0.02....

Darn near any reliable shotgun YOU can make work is a good HD tool.

A sub $200 Maverick, 500, 37,1200, 870 that fits you and that you know well is as good a weapon as a tricked out Supermag Loudenboomer.

The Saiga I'm testing is a good candidate. So is every other shotgun here, though I admit the NEF single shot and the Beretta O/U wouldn't be my first choices.

The key element is us. A good shotgunner can make any shotgun of reasonable dimensions and gauge work.

A good rule of thumb is.....

If you're spending more on addons and mods than ammo and range fees, your priorities may need rethinking....
