I was out shooting with a friend yesterday. We were shooting at Allen Company 8”x1/4” AR500 steel plates. I bought them 3 or 4 years ago so they have been hit a lot.
My friend was shooting his Springfield Armory XD Mod2 subcompact 45 at a plate when one side of the rope hanging it let go. I figured a bullet probably hit the clip holding it to the rope. Went to fix it and found this

This is proof positive that even being nicked in the wrist with a 45 will take your arm right off.
He didn’t even hit it where it broke.

Looks like you got your moneys worth out of that target! It took lots of shots with little damage until it finally gave up.

Time for a replacement.

Stay safe.

Absolute proof of Hydrostatic Shock 😲

You hit the target near the lower right corner and the thingy loop in the upper left broke.
Maybe there's no Hydro but it was some kinda weird shock stuff going on. Maybe trauma waves or energy dump. My money is on the energy dump.

But you know what they say, “doesn’t matter what you shoot, if you can’t hit what you’re aiming at it don’t matter”

I read that somewhere, don't ask me where.

"wouldn't want to get shot by it" 🙄

"better than a sharp stick" 🙄

"nobody volunteer to get shot by it" 🙄

"better than harsh words" 🙄

You're the one who posted them.

I have 2 Allen 10 inch AR500 gongs that also busted in the same spot twice each. I need to take em to the local welding shop and have either more holes cut or some sort of hanger welded back on them.

LOTS of cutting fluid and a bit you don't care about in the press, not too bad. I have had it happen as well, but on a tear drop target with just one hanger. I actually think I got 3 holes before the bit was toast. It was a cheap bit and sharpening it did not really help. This is the route I would take.

When you think of the shock they take I can understand a crack at the weak point. Mine hang down there year round, bet that is not good on them as well, my big gong has been hit the most, and it is still with me, that little tear drop not that often and not often with anything "big" or moving "fast". It was the first to go, it had the least "meat" on the hole to hang it also.

And one last thing, at least you did not use an arm brace, that makes the caliber bigger when it leaves the gun.

Hang a short piece of chain fastened at both ends and bolt the target in the middle. It will work fine hanging by one ear.

It will spin however and that can take a sec to calm down. This could be a plus or minus depending on what you are doing. I have also had the chain "hop" where it is hanging from and then the plate will hang on a wonky way. Again good or bad, but usually bad, sends the splatter off in ways you might not have planned for, or a full on bounce. Nothing worse then thinking well I can hit that, the you hear thunk.....did that just hit the f-ing barn? You don't want that.

If you can loop it around like you suggest that is the best thing to keep it pointing the right way. Hooking one end of the chain to the plate, and the other to whatever it is hanging from is not ideal.

No, it won't spin if you run a bolt through the chain, I've done it. The plate will hang at a downward angle if the chain is bolted behind it.

I have a steel IPSC target I shoot pistols at. Just a wonderful clang to let you know when you hit it.

I’d dusted off my old Remington 11-87 Police. Loaded a slug in it at about 25 yards.

It sounded like a church bell. And, cartwheeled the target, 2x4 and stand into the berm.

Lord that’s a lot of energy.
