What political system would you prefer to see in place of our pseudo-democracy/republic?

For the record, I have my own theoretical issues, too... the tyranny of the majority is still a tyranny. But what would you propose instead? And what else do you think would actually work (a big difference!)?

Anarchy :p

Actually, that won't work either, because a bunch of civic minded do-gooders will inevitably get together and start organizing some sort of "government"

How about conscription...? Instead of elections, just pick a citizen's name out of a hat to serve in X office for a year - sort of like we do for jury duty now, except no exceptions and no excuses. Sure, you might end up with a moron or an idiot, or even George W. Bush (but I repeat myself, as Will Rogers said ;) )

BTW, I do vote, or at least I have up until now. I dunno about 2008 though .... :uhoh:

Then it will be time of a larger group of Anarchists to get together and abort said government. ;)

True, 'prolly won't work unless people have been brought up in such an environment from birth. Ah well...

Personally I think the conscription idea has the best chance at working in our current social and political structure. Three hots, a cot and a stylish orange and pink paisley jumpsuit for our Congress-critters during their term in office.

There's a book called The Unbeheaded King where they choose a king by chopping off the head of the old king and tossing it into the crowd. Whomever catches it is king for 5 years, and then he gets to assist in picking a new king :D

The tension between what we know could work...and what would actually work is the real rub isn't it?

In a perfect world...all men and women are self-sovereign philosopher kings/queens who interact voluntarily with others without overstepping the bounds of their own liberty.

...nigh impossible in reality.

I would settle for a drastic restriction of what I see as a growing tendency towards socialist democracy (meaning mob-rule grounded in the redistribution of wealth)...and I hope that to much damage hasn't been done to the archetype of the rugged individualist to keep that from happening once we've "had enough."
